After reading the thread about the stolen guitars, I thought this link from Frets.com might be helpful. For Gibson guitars or any others with truss rod covers, I've also heard of inserting small labels under the truss rod cover. This is probably not quite as good as the Frets.com method, since it could be easily discovered, should the thief remove the truss rod cover.

One of the biggest problems law enforcement officers face when dealing with stolen property is getting it back to the rightful owner, once it's recovered. Many people don't bother to record their serial numbers, so unless you can prove it's yours, it's difficult to get it returned. Also, should the thief attempt to remove the serial number, having a hidden ID tag would be an alternate way of proving ownership.

Mike, that's some interesting information. Seems simple enough to do and could mean the difference between getting a guitar back or not. It also brought two unrelated things to mind. I wish I'd had the info on Knox Gellatin when I was a kid. My mother and her friends used to use Knox to strengthen their fingernails. I would have loved to tell her in the middle of a mouthful that she was ingesting hide glue! Also, the pictures of the hide glue operation reminded me of a hidden camera report on Dateline NBC about the making of chrystal meth!! That looked a bit suspicious, don't you think? lol Anyway, good information. I think I'll start typing up my labels.

Hey guys,

I just had a discussion about breaking and entering in my office yesterday. And I take an acoustic with me mostly every day.

I just moved into a new neighborhood that is "safe" I was told. Eventhough this is supposedly a safe neighborhood, I moved the other three Guitars in in the dead of night. You just cannot take a chance on something so valuable. And I thank you for this discussion thread and tips from frets.com. =D>
