berk Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 I'm looking to buy a Les Paul "classic 1959" with serial nr "9 35xx" which dates it to 1999. It has "1959" engraved on the pickguard, instead of the common "1960" engraving. Here's my question: I cannot find any info on a LP classic 1959, all info I can find leads back to the LP classic 1960. Does anybody know what I'm looking at here, is this the same guitar as the "1960" classic? In advance, thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this! Leo
Tim Plains Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 Don't think it exists. Aside from the original, the only '59 anything you can get is the 1959 reissue.
ckledzepplin Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 if it is a web ad post a link to the ad and post pics
Thundergod Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 I think I've seen a les paul with 1959 written on the pickguard... but dont remember where or when... dont even remember if it was a classic
berk Posted October 31, 2008 Author Posted October 31, 2008 It's an ad on a dutch site which doesn't allow deeplinking. These are the pics (the scripting on the pickguard isn't very clear, but the seller assured me it reads "1959"):
crossroadsnyc Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 yeah that looks like a "0" to me - will he send you a shot with more clarity?
Mule 1 Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 I think that is a regular LP Classic with a faded 1960 inscribed. That is the only way a classic came unless it had a plus top (which I have) See if you can get a pick of the serial #. It looks authentic other than that.

Leo [/quote'] doesnt exist. your pics clearly show a Classic with the standard "1960" pickguard
Raptor Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Your best bet is to send an e-mail with the serial number and photos of the guitar to service@gibson.com and ask them. You will need to save the pics to your computer and attach them to the e-mail as the Gibson customer service people do not have internet access. So they can't go to the site and look for themselves. I vaguely remember seeing one of these in my local shop and asking about it. It was an LP with 1959 on the pickguard, but for the life of me I cannot remember the details of it.
deepblue Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 I may be way off base here, but one thing I noticed about my R9 is where the words "Les Paul" were located on the headstock. I actually thought it was a flaw when I got it home, but after doing a check of other guitars of that era I was relieved to know that thats how they came back then. So shouldnt this 59 classic have the words "Les Paul" closer to the Gibson logo? Heres some pics showing the difference. A regular 2007 Gibson Les Paul...."Les Paul" centered. My 1959 reissue...."Les Paul" closer to Gibson logo.
AXE® Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Lokks like a run of thr mill Classic, all the way down to the greenish tinted inlays. The pickguard does not appear to have 1959 scribed in it. Does it have a one or two piece back ?
