Yea, Gibson was the first to do it in 1958 but i am glad they did not issue many Explorers with it,

Sorry it is not only ugly but impractical, the angle of the string behind the nut to the tuners is just asking for trouble.

I have seen several Gibson prototype electric mandolins with similar headstocks. They were not very practical instruments as the bridge was way close to the neck and I think they were made for a show like NAMM or something like that.

It functions to add sustain according to Dean Zelinsky

on dean's more angular designs the dean headstock works in my opinion. It's distinctive. Even if the bodies are derived from Gibson designs, there's no mistaking a dean for a gibson once you see the headstock.

I HATE their 6 in line headstocks. Although I think I know why they stopped using the design that they were using about 10 years ago when I had a Dean Avalanche 7 string. If I remember right it had 4 on one side and 3 on the other but it looked a lot like a Fender headstock. Wouldn't be surprised if Fender threatened legal action.
