flatbaroque Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Gday people, I've posted a couple of soundclips lately. Now you have a chance to see my rough noggin. just bought a zoom q3Hd. It works ok I think, this is just the onboard mics with no post edits. The format is a bit funny on the clip as I rotated the camera to get my head in with the camera close enough for good sound-hence the cropping. So it's my first youtube upload- I'll get better. Sound has a bit too much gain but you can still catch the J-45 tone pretty well Original song "fish in stone". Any feedback appreciated.
sternfan Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Nice job! Something about The 45 that makes it such a singer's guitar. Thanks for sharing.
MissouriPicker Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Got to love that gritty J45 sound. I like the song too. There is something to this stuff about a J45 being a songwriter's guitar.
JuanCarlosVejar Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 I didn't like the sound of it at all ... could be the mic that was used JC
MapleManiac Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Good job Song is pretty good but the guitar sounds out of tune to me.
gotomsdos Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Good job vocal and playing, but the guitar sound....in my ears, only strings vibrating, not much the top of it and out of the wood box. in other words, I can't hear the sound of chords, just the single strings sound. It seems that 6 strings are set up on a piece of wood only, without back and sides wood. What about trying another J45 ?
livemusic Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 flatbaroque... I love your screen name, awesome! Say, I agree with others that the sound needs some beefing up. I am certainly nothing close to an expert but I'll share this. I have recorded a lot of songs on one track through a handheld recorder. Zoom H4, H4n or Tascam DR-07. It sounds MUCH, MUCH better if I tweak the raw recording a bit. I import the WAV into my laptop and use (free) Kristal software and free effects. My routine is I... 1. boost the overall level a bit if it needs it 2. tweak EQ just a little if it needs it 3. add some reverb 4. add some compression or limiting That took me a few years to master but I do it quickly now! And, yep, your guitar was slightly out of tune, the recorders never lie! Keep at it, it gets easier thanks to wonderful forums such as this. EDIT: Oh, I see you recorded with a video camera. Hmmm... beats me how to augment that!
fortyearspickn Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Fltbrq - Good Job! Now try a similar, but different song and see how mastering two - that one improves your performance on the other and visa versa. Your J45 is great!
flatbaroque Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 Guys, thanks very much for listening and for your feedback and advice. Cheers.
retrorod Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 I kind of like it. The tuning sounds wierd to me. What is it? I really do like the feel of the song. Man...theres more 'thump' coming out of that guitar than a rabbit has in it..! Rod
retrorod Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 On second listen Flatbaroque (I really like that name)...I really get your song and like your sound. Would you please print the lyrics. I would like to do that one. Rod
EuroAussie Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 I actually quite like it, the vocals and mood remind me a lot of Tex Perkins, of whom Im a fan. It sort of sounds out of tunish, but I actually quite dig it, was that deliberate to get that kind of voicing ? I dig it.
JuanCarlosVejar Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Just wanted to point out I liked they lyrics and the way you sang them . but you might to check the mic or as others have said the tuning. JC
flatbaroque Posted February 13, 2012 Author Posted February 13, 2012 Gday guys, quick note on the tuning dilemma....I'm capoed on the third fret and my root chord is a broken G... 320030...which gives a slight dissonance to the sound, which im after. I'm also bending that B string frequently, basically i keep my third finger anchored on that 3rd fret b string most of the time and hammer on other chords around it when in open position. When I go up the fretboard Im using that broken G as a movable chord. So one man's dissonance is another's out of tune...or maybe im just out of tune...haha .. good reponse here..on AGF i get one reply....and that's one more than usual. Retrorod lyrics as requested Fish in stone Here he is that fish in stone Convicted now to lay alone He’s tired of analysis Too close to the bone Profiled , well lit under white light dome Do you wonder where lost love goes To the bottom of the ocean for all I know Or maybeits in a blood red rose Or just a thorn that comes and goes Rain on rita, rain on down Erase erode evolve me From the burying ground Cool heads and cooler hearts Combined together to keep them apart Inside out , outside in Whose got the first stone Whose got the sin Do you wonder where lost love goes That icy wind snapping at your clothes I swear I smell it from my head to my toes Rain on rita, rain on down Erase erode evolve me From the burying ground Prides alignment can be sharp and cruel Ah rita your mirror caught me out too Cradle rocks and baby sings Fallen angel hands in his wings Takes the walk like everyman That’s loved and lost as best he can And he wonders where lost love goes Not in god’s heaven maybe down below Or in that blue note whose sound just grows and grows Enough of me what about you Heard you had a love or too Did it work out fine Did you bring it on home Or are you just another fish in stone Rain on rita, rain on down Erase erode evolve me From this burying ground
blindboygrunt Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 great as usual john your lyris are great , out there but yet still make sense . have that great quality that they will translate slightly differently to everyone who listens to them where you get your inspiration from? you a poetry guy ? again thanks for posting , i really enjoy your stuff and ... i like the fact its slightly 'out of tune'
dhanners623 Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Cool tune, but the guitar sounds out of tune to me, and that really is grating after a minute or so. Could just be the way the camera records it. But it is noticeable.
JuanCarlosVejar Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I know that when a guitar is capo'd it tends to go out of tune almost all the time ... so I think the best thing would be to check the tuning once it is capoed again. JC
Tiny Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I enjoyed that a lot. Loved the song, and even with the camera phone, I got a good feel for the woody, thumpy tone of that J-45.

Your sound and delivery of this song make it 'truly' your own. A very honest delivery that is inimatable. You own it brother! I could spend an evening listening to material like that...Really!
