bsflyingv Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 I am trying to identify the year of this Gibson SG. I will try to get pix of the pots soon to date the guitar but in the meantime, this headstock baffles me. It has the appearance of a pre-1977 serial number yet it doesn't have the decal either. And it doesn't have the "Made in USA" stamp either. And the serial numbers look smaller to me. Anyone have some expertise or thoughts on this? Much thanks for your help, bsflyingv

Grog Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Here is a shot of the front headstock.. It looks to me like the guitar may have been repaired and or refinished, then re stamped with odd sized stamps. It looks like it did have some headstock damage. From 1975 to part of 1977, Gibson used an eight digit serial number, applied with a decal. The decal also had the model & "Made in USA" on it which would explain why it's not stamped. A decal serial number starting with 00 would date it to 1976. The volute looks a little like it was sanded a bit also. Check the pot codes & it should read 76 (the 4th & 5th numbers) or 75. Here is an example of a decal serial number............ http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-1976-GIBSON-E-S-ARTIST-SERIAL-NUMBER-DECAL-/320846062182?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item4ab3ea6266
