EvanPC Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 OK, so Friday night I stopped at GC and spent a couple of hours with a very helpful rep who was taking the time to explain things to me, etc, etc. Well, I ended up leaving with Addictive Drums software, Analog Factory software, and an M-Audio MIDI controller. By about 2:30am, I had everything hooked up, and seemingly communicating with each other. It's putting it mildly to say that I don't know what I'm doing...and my first recording attempt was very cumbersome and I've clearly got a lot to learn. Anyway....here it is... http://soundcloud.com/evanpc/meh-first-try The guitar part is a buddy and me, recorded a year or more ago. I decided to dig it up and use it as the foundation of my experimenting with the new software. The drums are sub-par....just sloppy. But I was too impatient to get it better, so my tapping on a keyboard will have to do.
rocketman Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Nice! I use EZdrummer but I don't know how it compares to Addictive Drums. EZdrummer uses real recorded drums. Once you get used to it you can actually modify the drum parts directly in the DAW software. I did this multiple times in this tune I recorded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CaGo8agoBs&feature=g-upl&context=G2e12cb2AUAAAAAAAAAA

RS1976 Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 not bad man. for a first try that was pretty good

I have it in CUBASE 6 and it's very seemless. Goes for $99. See here which includes a nice video.
RaysEpiphone Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Like some one said...Not bad for a first try. You can go 2 ways with this. You can keep working with the software and slowly get the hang of it or you can learn to actually play the instruments your trying to duplicate with said software. I've been working with DAW's for decade's now, not as a steady job but recording school and the time I've put into my work-station's have given me a good helping of the way it goes with Pro DAW's. There is a good demo for the EZ Drummer on Youtube, to me it looks like a manual drum machine that has some extra flexibility with-in DAW's. This Demo is short so I don't know everything about it but it does look fairly simplistic, not my cup of tea but some people may like it and it sounds good enough to use. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH6hzTh3YHc
EvanPC Posted February 13, 2012 Author Posted February 13, 2012 Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I learned a lot in my short time with this new stuff, but still have a ton to learn. Addictive Drums has seemed decently easy thus far, but there are still some things I need to figure out, such as: - How to output each drum to its own input in my DAW - Diving into all of the editable parameters The Analog Factory software has been a pleasant surprise. Drum software is what ultimately drove me to GC, but I'd say I've spent more time on the synth stuff than the drums. Still a lot to learn here too. While I've got the MIDI Controller working with the software, and I'm able to record tracks, I know there's still things I'm missing. MIDI Inputs, Ouputs, Quantizing, Synchronizing, etc, etc. Like I said...a lot to learn. I'd love to get a drum kit. I can actually play them, to a basic extent, however, an acoustic kit would be far too loud in my apartment, and I don't have enough faith in electronic kits that are less than $2k.
EvanPC Posted February 15, 2012 Author Posted February 15, 2012 Here's my second attempt. MUCH better than the first, IMO (completely different jam). Still lack any real patience to make things "pristine" on these recordings. They're more intended to be exploratory/educational run-thrus, but it's nice when it sounds decent too. http://soundcloud.com/evanpc/dubstop-orientation
