Re fret for a 2005 J-45 Rosewood

Hi there!

My name is Blake Havard and I am a singer songwriter from Vancouver Canada.

I was wondering what gauge and brand of fret wire I should use to re-fret my Gibson Rosewood J-45 (2005).

I like the tone and feel of what was originally on it. Warm with sustain.

If you have any recommendations I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you!

Blake

If you like what you have now, you should simply tell your luthier to re-fret with the same material. He'll look at the guitar and match what's there. He should also ask you to inspect what he has chosen so that you can sign off on it.

Fret preference is largely a function of playing style.

a re-fret shouldnt b required on a 2005 guitar

maybe a fret dress

Hi Blindboy,

I wish you were right!

Thanks for the response.

I have played the crap out of this thing.

From the 7th fret back there are major indentations from string wear.

Not sure if it has a much of an opportunity for a dress on some of the frets.

Frets are fine up higher past 6th fret though.

Cheers,

Blake

Thanks for the response 45Nick!

I agree with everything you say.

I just want to make sure I know the fret wire so I don't get swayed to another brand or size.

Always get great compliments for this guitar live..don't want to fix what ain't broken!

In theory anyway!!

Cheers,

Blake

Blake, you can usually get one fret dressing out of a set before a re-fret is required. If the problem is that strings are "fretting out" higher up the board, a combination of a fret dress and an adjustment of the neck relief might buy you a few more years at minimum cost. It's time to find a good luthier, if you don't already have one.

By the way, I enjoyed the song you posted. Your J-45 certainly has that classic J-45 tone.

Here is the band version I recorded with Pete Droge.

My SJ-200 had a pretty inconsistent (i'm being nice, it was bad) fret job when from the factory. i didn't really realize that that's what was causing me the most trouble for a year or so. I had the guitar re-fretted with jescar fretwire and i've been a happy camper since.

The size was: .095"x.047" (considered medium jumbo as described to me)

I had considered "jumbo" .104"x.047" (considered jumbo as described to me) but it would have been maybe a bit too big. totally fine, but bigger than needed.

I went with stainless steel fretwire too. It cost a little more to have done with stainless but overall it was an extra $50 well spent i think.

Always good to know a good tech.

I haven't been to To in years but I remember visiting my brother there and hanging out at the 12 Fret guitar shop.

I may be out there this year playing with Bill Dillon.

Thanks again for your kind comment and heads up on Dave.
