TommyK Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Google? circumventing privacy settings? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/46431833 Here's Google's new logo: If you are using a service for free, YOU are the product. And why was it Google pulled out of China...?? Privacy issues??? This is just another reason I do not Google.
pfox14 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 I don't see it as a big deal. No one has to use Google or Snoople if they don't want their online activities tracked.

Guest farnsbarns Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 I agree, all this fuss bubbles up every so often. I look at it like this... I am going to be subject to aggressive marketing if I use the internet. Google uses data it collects about me to make that marketing as targeted as possible. I rather have well targeted marketing shoved in my face than random marketing I am less likely to be interested in. In fact, I thank Google for making internet marketing as bearable as it can be.
Duende Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 I think you have to not get too worried about this kind of stuff, my uncle is extremely paranoid and thinks everyone is watching him and out to steal his information LMAO... he is a very uptight and unhappy man too! I think **** it; I have nothing to hide and only tell my real close people real personal info. I use facebook, youtube and google etc for the great tool they are. Matt

Matt The problem is when the tracked information gets reported as your real information. Look yourself up on Spokeo sometime and see how much of it is complete fiction, but that's what your bank, insurance, and employer will get if they look you up there. (And yes, all three of those pay Spokeo for information about you if you're loan, insurance, or job hunting).

I appreciate what you are saying, but like you point out; this network you have cited is laughable and lacks credibility, so why get wound up over it being inaccurate? (as it will be inaccurate for everyone). Any decent employer would use credible sources for a reference i.e character and previous employer references. All this stuff for the most part is working well and a part of our modern world. Identity theft happens and other similar things, but crime happens in any medium of technology, it always has. I have met people who are paranoid (like my uncle) and they are usually very uptight and stressed people gripped by anxiety. Better to not get swept along by people's paranoia and worry and lead by example - i.e stay happy and calm. Matt
McDuff Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Meh if people really want to track you they can find pretty much everything about you if they are determined. Short of living in a cabin you built from scratch, with no permits you are traceable. The way I look at it if some one reads through all my texts emails etc all they will find is I am an incredibly boring young man with a sometimes macabre sense of humor. There is honestly nothing so extraordinary about me that would interest some one enough to search through the mountains of information mine is hidden in. I do refrain from getting a facebook though and one of the reasons for that is to ensure I or one o fmy friends don't post something stupid a potential employer may see.
djroge1 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Great advice; so many people should actually read and understand that statement. Most do not then they are surprised when they are fired... But on face book they have discretionary access control so that employers cannot see what is posted.
RaysEpiphone Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 In 2007 I used Safri for a about an hour or so to register my Mac Pro, Then I downloaded Fire Fox.
LarryUK Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 When I saw this thread title. I thought it was about 'Frankie Howard'. I doubt you've heard of him over the pond.
flyingarmadillo Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 On the humorous side of Google - when I went into the Spam folder for my Gmail account today the context sensitive advertising (you do realize they're reading your mail right?) switched to at least one link to a site with recipes for cooking Spam!
James Allen Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 I Stopped using Google back in 2005 when I found out all the sneaky stuff they were doing. I try to tell everyone I know about this company that declares to do no evil yet pretty much go out of their way to do so. Back in 2005 they were asked by the current presidential administration to release some info on searches. The goal was to see how often a search for something benign such as a search for "guitars" came back as links to porn. The administration didn't want WHO made the search. Google said no due to their concerns for privacy. Yet I caught one of those google thugs taking a pic of my house against my will so that they could document EVERYTHING on google street. Where's my privacy? Oh, and back in 2005 when they said no to Uncle Sam they agreed to give the Chinese govt the names of any persons searching the words freedom, liberty, etc. Double standard?
Malchik Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Duck Duck Go. They do not record IP search entries. Remember, your ISP still keeps logs of your activity. Your biggest fear is if your government makes recording and searching citizen's logs without warrant legal. America just had a bill last year that came close. Here in Canada they are trying to pass a similar bill. Don't allow the government in your bedroom without warrant.

You caught that too, eh? Google also refused to do business with reporting outlets which reported negatively on radical Islamists. "Radical" being the operative word. Just one more nail in my Giggle not coffin.
