johnnyraff Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 I have a 1999 gibson sg gothic with a bigsby on it. Id like to do some mods but im not sure where to begin. I really would like to do some capacitors or internal mods. Any recomendation for getting a better blues or vintage tone?
EVOL! Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 First, you need to post picks. Let's see that beauty! For a more vintage tone put a pair of Gibson 57s or a 57+ in the bridge and a straight up 57 in the neck. Less hot humbuckers will give you a sweeter tone, especially compared to the "modern" sound of the stock 490s. Yeah, I'm not a fan of the 490 series: muddy low mids and ouchie highs. Another pickup option would be a set of P-94s. They are humbucker sized P-90s. I have a P-94r in my SG Special and love it. Somewhere between a Quarter Pounder and a P-90.
johnnyraff Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 It actually has 490 and a 498t, i like the hunbuckers sound, i have 57 classics in my 339 custom. I was tinking about putting some caps in it. Ill get some pictures up soon.
Jeff-7 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Looks pretty sexy as is, I'd probably put a roller bridge on it if it were up to me. You could always go with the RS works wiring kit, a lot of people seem to really like them.
johnnyraff Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 I had problems finding a black chrome roller bridge when i put the Bigs on it. I was thinking of changing up the wiring and upgrading pots, but im not really sure who makes the best upgrades.
cabba2203 Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 My mistake its a 2000 That's nice - I dig it! I mod practically every guitar I get my hands on but oddly enough, I like that just the way it is. What do you find lacking in your guitar currently? That's a good place to start. If you're looking for vintage sounding pots/caps etc...I just picked up a wireing set from BCS Custom Guitars to put in a faded SG project I was putting together. Sounds great. http://bcsguitars.com/?page_id=1717
sellen Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 i just put on a gotho aluminium stop bar and a resomax locking bridge with graph tech saddles on my sg 61 reissue . That did a little impact on the sound. Little bit tighter and in crunch mode the sound felt maybe more delicate. Talking tiny changes.
BobB Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 If you want a bit more sustain and fine-tuning features, I would suggest swapping the stock stop-bar tailpiece for a Gibson TP-6 fine-tuning tailpiece.
johnnyraff Posted February 28, 2012 Author Posted February 28, 2012 I got some orange drop caps .22 and a .15, also found a roller bridge. Ill let everyong know how i like them and post back. Should the .22 go in the bridge position?
surfpup Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I got some orange drop caps .22 and a .15, also found a roller bridge. Ill let everyong know how i like them and post back. Should the .22 go in the bridge position? Hopefully you actually got .022uf and .015uf caps. In which case, yes, .022 in the bridge.
johnnyraff Posted February 29, 2012 Author Posted February 29, 2012 Yes those are the exact caps that I got.
johnnyraff Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 Well, I put the orange drop caps in and then swapped out my bridge for a roller. I was hesitand on drilling new posts, but then when i pulled out the little dinky posts i figured it couldnt hurt. The caps sound good, not much difference on the tone, but seemed to boost my bridge pu a little. Thanks for the advice everyone.
