BluesKing777 Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 1959 Gibson LG3 arrived in one piece. It will need a few little jobs done to it, but even with the old banjo strings or whatever is on it now, it sounds incredible and I could not be happier if I had Wayne Henderson make me a guitar..... I don't know if someone from the forum here let this go to get money or to trade up, but what a foolish thing to let this guitar go. Serious! I don't know any of the history , but it could only be a Martin lover's sale! Pictures to come after it has been cleaned and waxed etc. BluesKing777.

BluesKing777 Posted February 26, 2012 Author Posted February 26, 2012 Hey BK ! Its been a couple days with that new '59. We need a progress report Mate... Thanks for the interest. I changed the strings to some light (12s) Gibson Masterbilts I have, and also changed the plastic bridge pins to bone pins from Stewmac. I need to go to my luthier for a check and stuff (maybe a passive Fishman or Thinline pickup to match all my other guitars for the Fishman Spectrum DI I have). I have been holding myself back from my normal tendency of waiting for him at his front door first thing of a morning while I try and get a bit of feel for the guitar. I am no expert but it plays very nicely with that warm Gibson sound that turns to a bit of a growl when scraped, and smoothly all the way to the 14th fret. The shop claimed they set all their guitars up and this seems to be the case, but it has travelled a long way in a jet cargo hold and sat in a Customs bunker for a week or so. It has been played a lot in a few cowboy spots, but the rest seems to be untouched - a bit strange really - there are small divits on 2nd string, 3rd fret, and 2nd string, 1st fret. I play a real lot, but mu guitars don't have any divits - bizarre. I would prefer to run medium strings, but will wait and see what the luthier finds..... This sounds all very cool and logical, doesn't it? Well I am trying hard to be calm and not to froth and bubble while just quietly I have already played every tune I know! BluesKing777. P.S. there is a very slight issue of the second string sounding a bit 'banjoish' that did not change after I replaced the strings - possible a brace problem or bridge plate?
retrorod Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 I totally understand, BK...I was just rattling on ya a bit. I,m sure time and a look-over with your luthier will sort it out. Your LG sounds like my '57 CF when I got it. Lots of grunge and divots in the cowboy chord area and a couple of buzz/rattles. Several string changes and saddle lowerings over time and I have it like I want it. P.S. On the "banjoish" thing....perhaps it suffers some 'trauma' from its 'deliverence'....
zombywoof Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Congrats Hoss. '59 for me is really that last great year for Gibsons cuz that was the last year you got that nice round neck profile. I am also a fan of the 1950s Gibson non-scallop bracing. While they don't have quite the oomph, especially on the low end, of the earlier guitars I find them to be a bit punchier sounding which I like. And I have had guitars with divots the size of Crater Lake. No big deal - it was a quick and fairly inexpensive fix. Have fun getting acquainted with it and seeing what the old girl has to give.
