JuanCarlosVejar Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 http://www.acousticletter.com/the-ren-ferguson-archangel-stephanie-quayle-acoustic-guitar/ very nice . loved it !!! what do you guys think ? JC
pfox14 Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 It's real nice, but not for $100K - fahget about it
ParlourMan Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I actually find that quite gaudy.. My first thought was it made a Monarch look tame. Incredible craftsmanship though, but I'm not into it.
duluthdan Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Looks too pretty to play. Does it come with the blonde? Might generate a bit more interest, just sayin'. Actually, this is a great idea for the fund-raising tool that it was designed for. Someone will pay that. Not me, but someone who is a whiz with tax deductions, and has a guitar collection weakness, er..., propensity.
michaelsegui Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Not a fan of the red colour of the pickguard But I DO like the blue purfling lines
BigKahune Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 . Love the bling. That carving on the heel is in an unusual spot. .
JuanCarlosVejar Posted February 23, 2012 Author Posted February 23, 2012 Any one think of a songwriter deluxe ? the body reminds me of that . JC
JuanCarlosVejar Posted February 23, 2012 Author Posted February 23, 2012 It's real nice, but not for $100K - fahget about it well I think that since there are only 2 made (during the time Ren worked at gibson) . the guys at MV are trying to get their retirment from it . btw anyone know if Ren had a small workshop at his home to do these projects ? thanks JC
retrorod Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Its stylings and colors are not my cup of tea. Gorgeous back wood!
McDuff Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Beautiful, though I could never bring myself to actually touch it if it somehow ended up in my possession. Also I am a little put off by the fret board inlays I would like something a little more elegant; instead of just the name of the guitar. That being said its still a dazzling instrument.
rar Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 anyone know if Ren had a small workshop at his home to do these projects ? He does. In fact, he did a fair amount of work for Gibson evenings in his own shop -- where he wouldn't get interrupted constantly -- and uses it for woodworking projects having nothing to do with lutherie too. -- Bob R
Gibson101 Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 I'd take the girl in the last pic, but that guitar is ugly!! Besides three screws on the truss rod and everyone knows it's a fake.
bobouz Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 I can appreciate the workmanship, but beyond that it does nothing for me. Have to find somewhere else to spend that extra $100,000 hanging around in my pocket.
Morkolo Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 He did an amazing job on the heel of that guitar, what a talent.
gotomsdos Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Wow ! But it's art of guitar making not playing.
slimt Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 I think the detail is Outstanding ... Cool Piece...
ChrisA83 Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Umm.....I like the headstock.....shape....
EuroAussie Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Honestly ... thats one of the ugliest guitars Ive ever seen.
Versatile Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Hmmmmmmm.... Still thinking about this guitar I'll get back to you  V
zombywoof Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 You can throw all the bling you want on a guitar and in the end it still comes down to the wood and bracing. Pretty much just cake decoration.
Mojorule Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Well I am always impressed by the technical brilliance of Ren's carving and inlay work as it appears here, but don't always find the results entirely to my taste. This one, though, I think is an object of beauty in its genre, which avoids the extremes of kitsch (although this is a genre in which one must accustom oneself to a certain level of kitsch in order to appreciate highly ornate guitar carving and inlay). I too have a few reservations about the board inlay. Themed material matching the carving motif would have been preferable. The carving and guard are really nice though. I like it more than the dragon L5. However, what I really wanted to post is that JC's thread title is the funniest I've read in some time. Sort of from the ridiculous to the sublime and back again!

Mojo , well Me too I mean there are things i like and dislike about the guitar. I think the headstock and blue bindings are awesome ... but I would have asked for something different on the fretboard too . I like the carving but I don't like the pickguard and I think you don't need gold on a guitar !. but I can still see Ren's skill as a luthier in everything he did on that. the title was to reflect that it both impressed me and it didn't (if that makes sense) . And I don't think these will be the type of guitars he will be putting out in the future. I saw one of the guitars he built back before he worked at gibson and it was a Martin style dread . It seems the new ones might be gibson style in some ways . JC
pfox14 Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 In general, the feedback on this guitar appears to be pretty negative. Not that I'm surprised, but you'd think there would be more people who would appreciate it. Guess not.
