NiceGuyEddie Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Hi...I am considering an es 137 custom with the varitone, ebony and gold hardware. I would like to change out the pickups to the 498/490's. I know they come stock in the es 137 classic. However, I love the look of the custom. Before I do this ,are the pickups on the custom wired differently because of the vaitone? Curious how they are wired and if i can just get the 498/490's and slap them in like any other guitar.
brundaddy Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Same wiring. Easy peasy. When you're done I can take the 57s off your hands for you.

vincentw Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 You might give a listen to the 57s before you buy the replacement pickups.
canon_mutant Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Yeah hey to each their own and whatever sound good to you do it but the 57s are the cream of the crop to me. I wish my R9 had a 57 classic/classic + in it but it's too rare to change it and it's not like I don't like the sound with the BBs. I just prefer those 57s! I think they'll grow on ya . . .
BigKahune Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 You might give a listen to the 57s before you buy the replacement pickups. +1 Play them for a while. .
TinyBabyBrandon Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Yep, I have to agree with everyone here. the 57's are the bee's knees, however, it's no secret that the 137 classic does sound great, so whatever floats your boat, just give them a little while to grow on you.
NiceGuyEddie Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 I had an es 137 with the 490/498's and let it it go! I am a fool, I miss it. I want one again.
cjmwrx Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I agree with everyone else. Give the 57 Classics a good run. They really are, in many people's belief including my own, the nicest pickup Gibson manufactures.
Artisan Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 The '57 Classics are a bit brighter and more well rounded than the 490/498 combo. The 490/498 pickups have a more classic rock mid range sound. I have a ES-137 Custom and I really like the '59 Classics. You can play with the varitone and get the sound you want. I'm sure you will like it...
Versatile Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 The ES 137 Custom is the cat's whiskers in standard form.... V
canon_mutant Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Just wish it had 2 more frets . . . Oops, sorry, was thinking about the 175! Never mind . . .
