Suggestions Needed

Hey Y'all - I'm recording a soundtrack for a bass fishing instructional DVD, and I need some quick advice from any of you that do any home recording.

It's an acoustic slide piece (my Ry Cooder impersonation) with some swamp ambience ala crickets and frogs and whatnot...but what I am looking for is a low hum in the background, like a moog or mellotron sound, in a deep D, that sounds eerie and distant...any idears?

didgeridoo!

1st. question would be, are you going through an audio console, or straight into the pc?

2nd question would be, if it is an audio console, does it have an oscillator built in?

If so, I would turn on the oscillator, set it for a really low freq. (scan the band until you fine a freq. that matches what you're doing,) then set a key to trigger it, when needed. A lot of times I've seen rappers do this with much success to give bigger "thump" to their bass line, or kick drums.

depends on the type of bass. upright' date=' fretless, double.......[/quote']

Hear hear Cunk. I was going to ask........................you can't fish with a bass, surely!?

On a more serious note - this is me thinking out loud.

How about tuning down bottom E to D on one of your acoustics. A 12 string even! Plug in to an amp and mike up. Mute all other strings. Then play around with your volume controls/notch filter (if fitted) until you get a nice low feedback on the string.

If you can digitally double track it or add some phase/chorus/reverb, you might get some interesting sounds?

Might be complete nonsense but could be worth a try.

John,

You have something in your head that you already hear, right? Tell us what equipment you have at your disposal. Maybe we can come up with a few more ideas, though I saw a couple of good ones already. You mentioned mellotrons, got Mike Pinder's number? Remove the narration from, "Among The Stars".

Crickets, yes, no bull frogs, but a Jawsharp homony going there and a "LOW D" I'll have to get my tuner out but I'd say it's close to a D... Maybe an F#t.

May have to clip it short of the dialogue. But if you loop it right it'll sound good. And, you may avoid havin' to pay royalties.

Yer Welcome :^o

Some good suggestions, for sure. Yeah, I have the sound in my head, and I'm hearing a low bubbly synthesizer which reminds me of the pause in the song 'Frankenstein' where it's low and bubbly and picks up with the drums. Or, that low synthesizer intro into REOs 'Ridin The Storm Out' before it goes into the siren wail. That kinda thang. I'm doing this straight into the PC with ProTools, and I don't have a Moog or anything at my disposal, so was hoping for a sound wav I can loop. I found all the other sound effects I am using on the net - crickets, frogs, owl hoot, etc. But, no luck with the Moog sound as of yet. I need it to be low and eerie sounding, somewhat ominous in the background, as a foundation of sorts for the slide.

Thanks for the good suggestions, gonna play around with some of them.
