DanvillRob Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Ray Davies is an underappreciated song writer and musician.
saturn Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Uh, I think I already posted this about a month or so ago. Great song though and deserves re-posting. I love that driving bass line.
Searcy Posted February 26, 2012 Author Posted February 26, 2012 Then I'll plus ya for beating me to it.
surfpup Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Ray Davies is an underappreciated song writer and musician. No doubt. Albums like The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society and Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) are masterpieces on par with the Beatles best albums. I love the Muswell Hillbillies as well. I even dig some of the later stuff - Low Budget and Give the People What They Want. Not to mention One for the Road - one of the best live albums ever, IMHO.
Versatile Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Ray Davies is an underappreciated song writer and musician. Au contraire... I think you'll find Ray Davies is very well appreciated He headlined Glastonbury recently One of the great eloquent songwriters of all time V

Yep!

DanvillRob Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 and 10 out of 10 can pick Ringo out of a lineup but wouldn't know Ray or Dave if they lived next store. HA! I couldn't have said it better myself!
saturn Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I will always remember who they are because I share their last name. :)
saturn Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h1oRP7FfBw And, did anyone else notice the irony of playing a song called "Sunny Afternoon" while standing in the snow?
MissouriPicker Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Under-rated and under-appreciated. I liked The Kinks. They were kind of like a poor man's Beatles. Not as uncouth and corrupt as the image The Stones worked-at, but not as smooth and clean-cut as The Beatles.....Cool stuff. Thanks for the video.
zigzag Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Great band, good timing for that song. Love their tone on that recording.

Yes I agree, a fair comment... I believe the reasons for that are the huge star/publicity machine which got behind the Beatles, not so much with the Kinks... Brian Epstein was an impresario with talent and imagination, and as is well documented, pitched the Beatles' image perfectly to appeal (without offence) to the maximum number of fans of all age groups And (red face time)...I struggle to name the bass and drums in the Kinks, excellent though they were... That's show business!..... V
Valeriy Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I have DVD video New Musical Express Poll Winners Concert 1965. There are the Beatles and the Kinks in one concert, they are in the end, even the Kinks play after the Beatles . But in my opinion the Kinks all the same lose to the Beatles a little . It is visible also on reaction of public. All the same presence of several good vocalists, as it is in the Beatles, this is a big advantage even irrespective of the impresario. Although I also love the Kinks song.

The concert was opened by John Sebastian, (just him, not The Lovin' Spoonful). To say that "America" was a let-down would be an understatement after John there all alone ... just him and a guitar....blew the doors off the place.
pfox14 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 The Kinks have to be considered among the most influential bands of the original "British Invasion" right along with the Beatles and Stones.
bonzoboy Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Ray Davies is a brilliant songwriter, his sardonic tongue in cheek lyrics were always a spot on commentary of the times we live in.
JohnMac Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Thanks for the post. After reading it decided to learn the song. Right up my alley. I've heard it many, many times but never paid close attention to the lyrics, Excellent song writing. John
Versatile Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa3FwO1Tx-M Possibly the best cover of a Kinks song The beautiful Kirsty MacColl.... V
