Particularly in the case of the satin Ebony faded. Hey there! I used to have a Gibson SG Special faded and it had the 490/498 humbucker combo. definately an awesome guitar!! it was a 2004 model. I believe they still come with those pickups. that one I had was not coil tapping, but when I played out with it, a couple people came up to me and asked if I had it 'coiltapped yet?' I was always like; 'huh'? I know what they meant now. I read on a spec. list for that guitar, that those pickups come with the fourth wire for the purpose of having it wired for split-coil operation. So perhaps the reviews you read were by poeple who bought theirs used or second-hand and the owner before them, perhaps had the wiring connected at or after purchase of the guitar. Just a possibility. I have an SG Standard GC exclusive with split coil and they are the 490/498 hum. combo. but who knows, gibson could have put out a coil splitting faded special and not adverised it. I think I would have seen it tho, as much as i love SGs. anyways. good luck!!!
