To Chamber or not to chamber

I just got through a round with the Les Paul and it never gets lighter! I was wondering' date=' does anyone here have both a chambered and a non chambered and what's the verdict? :P [/quote']

I have an '04 with weight relief holes and an '08 that is chambered. Although I haven't weighed them I can feel that the '08 is lighter. I found out that it's really easy to immediately know what you've got; just tap on the top and you'll here the difference. As far as sound through an amp, they do sound different. The '04 does seem to have a fuller sound while the '08 has a bit more edge to it. I love both though. I haven't played a pure solid body like an R9; hopefully Tim will tell us about his experiences....

In my searches I found something interesting (I guess). It's a video comparing an 2006 R9 to a 1978 Yamaha SG 2000.

I have an '07 that is chambered and an '05 that is not (it has weight relief holes I assume). The '07 is 8 lbs, the '05 is 10.1 lbs. They do sound different, but since I have different pickups in each, the differences in sound are a little harder to nail down. Here's what I do notice...

- The chambered guitar is louder acoustically

- The chambered guitar has a certain bite and hollowness to the sound - noticeable to me on the neck pickup particularly (a little more Peter Green like maybe?)

- The chambered guitar feels great after a few hours! :P

- The non-chambered guitar has the smoother, mellower tone. I don't notice more sustain as some folks have suggested, but it is just really warm.

- The non-chambered guitar has a better bottom end. The low notes really blossom.

there are turds both chambered and not. i personally prefer a bit of weight (but not too much). that being said, i had an 07 chambered faded std that sounded fantastic. i think the BB Pros are an excellent choice of pickups that compliment the chambered LPs nicely.

AGAIN!

OK I have several versions all three solid, weight relieved and chambered, i prefer the solid bodies like my R8, R9 and Warren Haynes as well as my old ones. they have the sound and feel I expect from a LP, the weight relieved like my faded honestly I can't usually tell the difference, but the chambered like my Black BFG (wk 25) definate differences in both look and feel. not bad just different.

Dude, there is no vertict.

I have a weight-relieved Standard and I had chambered BFG. Completely different worlds, I know.

I sold the BFG because I never played it. Had nothing to do with the chambered aspect, though.

A great guitar, in its own right.

I have a '97 LP DC studio, and it suits me perfectly. It's considerably lighter than a non-chambered, due to the double cutaways.

Weight is an issue for me. The heavier guitars tend to be uncomfortable for me during an extended playing session. Every guitar I own is DC, except for a hand built Tele.

It all comes down to your preference of tone, and the amount of weight you can endure. If the weight is not an issue for you, then you need to concentrate on the tone aspect.

Take your guitar to a music store that has the opposite guitar of what you own. Play them both at the same settings, through the same rig to hear the difference.

Regardless of the weight and tone issues, if you are not happy with the guitar you have, it's time to check out the options.
