Calton Cases

The saga with Calton Cases seem to continue. I was looking at their website after

reading forum topic 'best case for J-45'

The Canadian Calton have changed their name to "work Horse cases'

and the UK Calton website have issued a warning about WorkHorse Cases!

'Warning

To all prospective customers of Workhorse cases out of Moncton in Canada. You are now on the UK site of Keith Calton, designer and holder of the rights, designs and name of Calton Cases worldwide.

Workhorse cases are now using my name, designs, moulds and technology without my permission. The owner of Workhouse Cases did previously have these rights but they were withdrawn last year.

I hope to have a new agreement in place to manufacture and supply Calton Cases in the US and Canada in the near future.

Whilst Calton Cases in the UK continue to provide top quality cases and service there are various forums on the net discussing customer experiences relating only to the US and Canada.

Keith Calton'

Keith is a top guy & a pleasure to deal with here in the UK, so I'd take note of what he is saying.

Keith is the original inventor of the case & great to deal with here in the UK, so one shouldn't confuse the 2 companies.

Lefty is 100% right on this.

Keith Calton and only Keith Calton is the CALTON case brand, the inventor and creator of this technology design and molds. The North American company was under licence to make and sell them in the US and Canada (...but never paid Keith his Licence fee!!!)

Keith is a top man and provides a quality very high quality specialist truly "custom" case. I was lucky enough to visit him at his home workshop. We chated over several cups of tea and talk about this issue of the US distributer at length. Bottom line is he is being screwed by his Canada/US Licencee who no longer legally has a licence to make cases using Keith's molds and technology, which unfortunately he is still doing, albeit under a different name...

All the "issues" people hav discussed with broken promises and endless ordering problems of the past were the North American Licencee (...which I believe is now called Workhorse Co.)

My advice to any potential N. America buyer? Don't support this crook and Look elsewhere for a case until Keith is set up a honest Licencee or has Distribution across the pond.

..again, as Lefty has clarified above, these issues were with the North American Licencee, which has now become Workhorse.

There has been some discussion of the Calton saga and Workhorse cases on other forums. Generally opinion seems to be Caveat Emptor.

If ya want the best case there is - it would be better to take the time, open the wallet and hunt down a used Mark Leaf.

...meaning,... "Let the buyer beware."

Just a general observation on the materials used for composite cases. A carbon fiber/epoxy laminate is significantly stiffer compared to a fiberglass laminate of the same weight. This means that for comparable protection from raw impact, the carbon case will be lighter. A fiberglass case will probably be about the same weight as a high-quality plywood case. A carbon case should be lighter.

Even all plywood cases are not created equal. Differences in shell thickness add up to significant differences in weight and level of protection. As an example, the brand new, stock Gibson J-45 case I have (black/blue, Gibson Acoustic label) weighs about 10.8 lbs (4.9kg). The G&G custom J-45 Cali Girl case (brown/pink) for my old J-45 weighs 13.8 lbs (6.3kg), due to its five-ply rather than three-ply construction.

The case really depends on the level of risk. If your guitar(s) rarely leave the house a three ply plywood will do ya well. I like the nylon cases with the molded insets because they do a good job of protecting the guitar and are lightweight. Most of my guitars thougth when in the house are in their original cases which while they look cool are often not the best protection out there.

But if ya head on on the road with your guitar on a regular basis then go with the best case you can afford. So I tend to keep a couple of five ply cases as well. But being a cheapskate I snap them up used. I have found music stores often will have a really good quality case or two in the back room usually snagged from a guitar they did not think rated the case and which they figure they can sell separately to bring in as much cash as possible.
