Comparing Gibson to..... Hohner?

Was talking (on line forum I visit) to someone and happened to mention my Gibson SG and post a picture. Someone responds... "Nice, looks like my Hohner Revelation RTS"

I found myself highly offended... seriously, you just compared my *Gibson SG* to your *Hohner*? Really? I bet when people tell this person how proud they are of their kids he responds with "Yeah, that's like the time when my dog..." [cursing]](*,)

Can't help the way I feel. I guess I'm officially a guitar snob. [blush]

Well now, here's thing... Like it or not he was right, it does "look" like his Hohner. I fail to see why you're upset. Even if he said his Hohner sounded and played better it'd only be subjective and it seems he fell way short of saying that.

That's exactly my point actually, I should not be upset. That's why I'm officially a lowly guitar snob.

Oh I see, well, sort of.

Your not really being a guitar snob by getting upset because he didn't compare them other than to say they looked alike. More irrational nutter than guitar snob...

J/k :)

Always remember everyone is entitled to their opinion. And also remember not everyone knows everything there is to know.

Example: the guitar I play the most was made by a local luthier... it's beautiful and most people come ask about it after gigs. Now my pupils, most of the young (20y/o and younger) ask me if it's a fender knock off and if I couldn't afford a fender. I don't feel offended, not at all. When I tell them about her and that she actually costs more than a fender USA they say "then why not just get a fender" :D "Well, I got fenders and gibbies and other brands." ... "Then why get something that is made by some guy?" ... the thing goes on and on, and we could go on and on about it but it's a waste of time, some people play and keep it at that, they don't bother wasting time finding out about brands and specs, and believe it or not, they are really happy.

Farns? I had to Google the Hohner but......

Did you mean THIS Gibson SG lookalike.....?

Hohner.jpg

This is what 'Hohner Revelation RTS' returns through Google!

[smile]

Have Gibson brought out a new SG that I haven't heard about?! [scared]

Or is there more than one type of Hohner Revelation RTS ?

:-k

Haven't you heard of the Gibson SG SBHOSCAUP. (stupid big horns. Oversized cutaway. Ugly Pick guard). That thing is truly horrific. I am left wondering if the OP New what these looked like when he got mad? If so, you're quite right! :)

That would explain it

And again, to be clear, I was mad at the person, but was more ashamed at myself for being mad... if that makes sense.

Oh no I realise, I was just poking some fun at you when I called you an irrational nutter.

They guy had his verbage mixed up.

He more properly could have said . "My Hohner Revelation looks like your SG" . . because it's a cheap a$$ copy of a killer Gibson. . [cool]

Given how variations in neck shape, etc., might come into play, I can see how a well-made "copy" might seem as good or better than another instrument. Heavens, look at all the square shoulder dreads that cost as much or more than a D28 or Hummingbird, for heaven sake.

Yeah, I understand the way emotion can enter into such discussion and - <chuckle> - how it can almost feel worse than something that gets into politics.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't swap my 1970s Guild S100c for a new SG and one could make the case that the Guild is nothing but a copy of the Gibbie. But after playing it for approaching 40 years, it's just "my" guitar that ain't gonna get swapped.

Then again, I'm a playability nut. Frankly if a nicely made Hohner or Epi felt better to me than a similar Gibbie... that would actually be more my criteria for GAS. Although if somebody wants to get me a nice Gibson Acoustic Songwriter Deluxe Studio cutaway, I'll accept it regardless. I just can't afford it even at MF discount.

E.g., Gibbie made an early mag pickup AE in the 1950s that was a small flattop with Florentine cutaway that nowadays is only matched by the quite inexpensive Epi PR5e. I like both, but the one Gibbie I've seen in captivity is owned by a rancher who is quite protective of it. So I'm quite happy pickin' on the little Epi for a lotta early fingerpicked stuff I do. Forget it for Bluegrass, but...

If I may; at one time Honer was the stuff. They have some top quality stuff still yet it makes Gibson prices look affordable...

I have a 70's Honer frettless P-bass that is still the best fretless bass I''ve ever owned or played ( YES- I've had two or three) . People do attach mystique to names. Two of my four "Fender's" are actually 80's ESP's. I keep them because I prefer them to the equivalent American Fenders I replaced them with. They cost about the same as an American Fender when I bought them. I still get the "you're a lawyer, can't you afford a proper Fender" comments . . .
