Lazerface Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I have a boss ds1, hate the mid scoop. Thinking of getting a keeley ultra mod. Maybe i would benefit from an entirely different pedal. I also use an ocd. I need something with either flat mids or a mid boost as i can never have enough mids. Dont want a huge footprint either. Was considering mxr distortion plus. Dont need tons of gain, need fat tone and nice play with other pedals, a good buffer circuit would be nice too. Thoughts?
RowdyMoon Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I have this one.Digitech...but I also just picked up this yesterday Catalinbread so I haven't fooled with it much but so far sound good.
bigneil Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I never heard a pedal that sounded as cool as winding up the gain knob on a decent amp.
kaleb Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I never heard a pedal that sounded as cool as winding up the gain knob on a decent amp. Agreed! Rid yourself of that DS-1 (keep it, but don't rely on it. But keep that OCD as they make killer boosts!), save up for a nice Marshall head. Perfect amount of gain considering your tastes, midrange up the ***, and fatter than Buddy Miles right after Christmas! (THAT WAS NOT A JOKE FOR OVERWEIGHT INDIVIDUALS! I AM SORRY IF I OFFENDED ANYONE!). Oh, and get a custom made Avatar 4x12 too. Load em' up with some WGS (Warehouse Guitar Speakers) ET-65 (based on the late 70s Celestion G-12 65 speakers as used by AC/DC, Ace Frehley, very likely Thin Lizzy and many others) speakers and put that OCD in front for some extra testosterone, and you're in heaven!
Lazerface Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 I play a marshall class 5 and a hot rod deluxe. Been looking into some under 50 watt marshall non master volume amps. Ive also been checking out the ampeg gvt15. Im a big fan of combos, easier to lug. I know leslie west uses a tubescreamer and an ocd. I was actually originally looking for a ts9 or 808 when i settled on the ocd. Basically i just gotta look at stuff and make up my mind.
dem00n Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Well i'll give you two choices and you can only pick my two because im right. Either you guy buy a half stack or this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn8DwTeq1wo Either one will get you a good Distortion tone. People always say tube screamer but i think tube screamers are only good with amp distortion on. (Did he just say that? )
Malchik Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 high gain amp + max volume + shitty speaker = distortion.

Because...those amps you just listed are amps i wouldnt really say have "distortion tones". More so overdriven.
dem00n Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 high gain amp + max volume + shitty speaker = distortion. Thats for fuzz tones, get your **** right bro. Edit: Where my laugh go? D:
Lazerface Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 That pedal is nasty! I like using overdrives with vintage sounding amps. My ds1 now is generally used to add some background dirt to my hot rod plus ocd overdrive. Through the class 5 i can make some nasty pinch harmonics with the amp cranked and the ocd. I just need a more versatile distortion, and that nobrainer looks like it might do the trick

It is more in the Silver Jubilee/JCM 800 territory but you can get it in that vintage zone for sure. They have two preamp gain controls labled "Body" and "Detail". The former will easily get that warm Jubilee tone and is centered in the lower mid, low end region (kinda like the normal channel on a Plexi). The latter is more high endy, and is more like a 2204/Plexi high treble channel. They are interactive so you can blend the two in any way you want. That idea came from bridging the channels on the non-master volume Marshalls.
krock Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 high gain amp + max volume + shitty speaker = distortion. Poking holes in the speaker cone with a pencil always works
EVOL! Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Wait... Do you want OVERDRIVE tones or DISTORTION tones? I am confused too. You said distortion, but you are listing overdrive pedals (TS9, OD808, OCD, etc). I run two overdrive pedals: Maxon OD808 and a Small Sound/Big Sound F**K Overdrive. Both are very different and get the job done of dirtying up my guitar without going over the top.
bonzoboy Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 The Marshall Guv'nor and the older the model you can get-the better. The ideal ones are the British made first issue ones.Any of the Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi pedals is also a safe bet.I have a 1969/70 model and after over 40 years it hasn't given me a minute's trouble plus I've use it gigging ever since I got it.I've bought several other brands since but I keep going back to the Muff.I found it indispensible for doing Hendrix covers.
jdgm Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I've bought several other brands since but I keep going back to the Muff.I found it indispensible for doing Hendrix covers. Can't argue with that. Meanwhile I got my DS-1 modded and it sounds great now, plus I still have a RAT II which rocks. Plenty of choice out there!
T Bone Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 For OD, the OCD is great (don't have one). So are the TS9 and TS 808 Tube Screamers (have 2 of each). Distortion, I have a Rat (early big box circa 1982?) and an MXR "Classic Distortion" (not bad, was a bargain at GC for around $35). Also a Hendrix Fuzz Face and a Dunlop Octavia Fuzz. Those last two are great with the Strats, never really tried them with the Gibsons (put away on my larger pedal board). Really, depends on your amp (Class 5 I think?) and what sound you're going for. There are TONS of options. Many quite good.

That was my first thought. I'm a huge Big Muff fan but that doesn't seem to be what the OP is looking for. Scooped mids, etc
kaleb Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Sorry, amp distortion wins. Even SRV used his Tube Screamers just for a clean boost to hit his already cranked Fenders.
mikekefr Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I use this and love it if all you want to change is the tone, maybe an EQ pedal?

dem00n Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 "Spend less time chasing tones and more time just playing music." - Marty Friedman He owns tons pedals, guitar and amps too.
Lazerface Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 So, how is finding a better alternative to a ds1 "chasing tone". Spend more time being original and less time being a jerk
Willmkent Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I gotta say that Ampeg GVT15 is pretty sweet, Its a master volume style amp and really makes old school tone for sure! In my opinion the best type of tone for all around rock and versatility is an amp the creates your solid foundation of distorted tones and then an over drive to add the punch and sustain. -Will
Lazerface Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 So i discovered the fulltone gt500 today. I want to check it out. Anybody have one of these?
