Strings again.

I get a little flustered hopping around to find the ideal strings for my guitars. Individual preference aside, should I assume Gibson ( or Martin, et al ) has the best acoustical and engineering research into it's own instruments to build the best string for their design dynamics? It seems logical. Or do they make a 'decent' product that isn't really anything special, figuring the money's made on guitars, not strings? Do any of you guys actually endorse Gibson strings for Gibsons? Any thoughts on their strengths and/or weaknesses? Never tried 'em but I'm interested.

For what it's worth, one of the salesguys at a local shop told me that D'Addario is now making Gibson strings. Can anyone verify this?

Yep. Gibson shut down the string making plant in Elgin awhile ago. The story at the time was that they planned to start production in Nashville, and moved the machines there at the time of the shutdown. Could still happen, I suppose. But, for now, they're out of the string manufacturing business.

No. They -- whoever "they" may be -- experiment and decide what sound they like best, just as we do. In particular, the switch last year from phos bronze to 80/20 for the original equipment strings was simply because someone thought 80/20s sounded better.

John Pearse said my J45 had his strings on it. I don't like his strings.

I took them off.

John Pearse 80/20's in medium seem to agree with my AJ.

I didn't like them at first. The first couple of days they were way bright with a metalic overtone to them. I thought there is no way I will use these again.

After they settled in, I liked 'em much better than anything else I tried including D'addario, Martin and Elixir.

They last a good while too.

To each their own...

Who knows - 'they' might decide on EZ 85/15 next...
