Stock strings on Gibson Explorers?

Hi there,

I'm close to buying a 2005 model Gibson Explorer and the strings on there are currently rusted, does anyone know what the stock strings that came on the Gibson Explorer at purchase (new)?

I've heard that Gibson Brite Wire strings come as standard on Gibson Les Pauls.

I'm curious as to why you want to know. If you are wondering "what strings are the best to use" then there is no answer. That kind of question is up there with "what make and gauge plectrum should I use?" or "what kind of amp should I use?".

The only right answer is "whatever feels/sounds right". Even though the strings are rusty, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are still stock strings. Unless you have been told specifically that they are the stock strings. Having said that, when buying secondhand, be careful of liars.

I didn't word that one right, I meant to ask what strings people tend to like on their Gibson Explorer (I know it's down to personal views). I highly doubt they're stock strings that are on the guitar now, I was just wondering what the stock strings were when the guitar was made so I can purchase them and re-string it.

Yeah I am pretty wary of buying second hand that's why I've posted several photo's in a thread in the same sub-forum as this one, would you happen to take a quick look at the photo's as have had only 1 response.

Thanks!

It will still boil down to your opinion. A lot of people go for ernie ball or elixir strings. I prefer Gibson brite wires. I believe all Gibson electrics are fitted with 10's as standard, but I may be wrong. I'd highly recommend brite wires, but it's important that you buy a few different brands and find the right one for you. I'm a very particular person and like to do things a certain way. All my guitars are fitted with gauge 10 brite wires. If I go to the store looking for strings and can't find brite wires, I leave the store empty handed and look elsewhere. It's a good idea to try and find strings that you feel comfortable with. For an electric guitar, 9's or 10's will do the trick nicely. 11's at a push, but most (electric) guitarists tend to stick with 9's or 10's.

Do you mean this thread? The explorer looks 100% legit to me.

Edit:

While I'm on the subject, you may want to read my posts in this thread. I used to own an explorer and loved the guitar, but hated the case. It's something to keep in mind if you don't have your own car. It may be wise to find a good gig bag for the explorer. If you have a car, just ignore this paragraph. ;)

Yeah I must have the 10/46 Gibson Brite wires on my LP studio, which means I should be satisfied with them. While looking through ebay though for these strings I came across what seems like two different types:

http://www.ebay.co.u...9#ht_1367wt_922

http://www.ebay.co.u...2#ht_500wt_1169

Is there a difference with the Gibson 'Pure' brite wires compared to the other brite wires in the other link do you know?

Yeah, that's the thread, thanks for that msp_smile.gif

Funnily enough I was reading through that thread the other day, I don't think I'll have that problem though as I'm a hobbyist at the moment, so there's no need to travel anywhere with it cool.gif

I use Elixir 9 - 46s on my Explorers mainly because I'm a sweaty sod.

I also love the way my fingers glide over the wound strings more easily.
