Thunderchild Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Did they really offer a free guitar with a new VW?? Why dont they do anything like that in the UK? :P Yep, it was for real, but the guitar was like $49.95 at wal mart. Not a very good one. Promo didn't last very long either. TC

TC LOL now if they were giving away a Gibson.. now thatd be something else.. i was wondering what make that was he was playing.. SLASH what were you thinking ?? :P (yeah I know, money, but still)
Thunderchild Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 It was a First Act guitar, and I remember reading somewhere that they had to work over the one he played so it would play and sound half way decent. Haven't seen or heard of them for a long time. TC
stein Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 You would think for the prices of those VW's they could at least include a genuine Gibson.
TommyK Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Apparently, they were trying to regain the teen/college student market they had with the Beetle through the 1980's. Not a chance on a better'n $20K car. The new Vee Dub is a nice vehicle, but a kid's car it ain't.
dem00n Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 B.S. Ive played one of those guitars at a Sam Ash used once and it was pretty damn good and solid. It was only selling for $250, a simple pup change and its ready for a jam. Also First Act has a custom shop that quite a few famous guitarist use, never played one but id love to try one of the 10 string models.
krock Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Even if it was a counterfeit........ What was cool about that car is it had a gtr input in the stereo with built in distortion. And people thought texting while driving was bad Top Gear UK proved you can do anything (within reason) whilst driving, such as being in a mummy sleeping bag or sewing a button on a shirt

Searcy Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Are First Act guitars good guitars? Most people only know their less expensive stuff but they offer a full range of price points all the way up to a full on custom shop with quality to go right along with those prices.

Thanks to Ralph Nader there were no Beetles in the U.S. after 79 when safety standers essentially outlawed them. The "New" VW Beetle hit the U.S. market some time in 1997/98
SlashPerryBurst Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Top Gear UK proved you can do anything (within reason) whilst driving, such as being in a mummy sleeping bag or sewing a button on a shirt Yes. And thank god they didn't ask Hammond to do what he said he would.

The "New" VW Beetle hit the U.S. market some time in 1997/98 I owned a Super Beetle (A Beetle with a bit more leg room and a curved windscreen, but still a 2 door sedan. The biggest reason they were discontinued was the inability to put a catalitic converter on itto meet US EPA Standards. The exhaust system wasn't long enough to fit one in. That, and they couldn't adapt fuel injection to the boxter 4 They continued to be built and sold in the Mexican/Central American and South American market into the 21st century. Which explains the easy availability of body panels for these quick to be come rust bucket autos. VW replaced it with the water cooled, front drive VW Rabbit.
EVOL! Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 I was forced to play one of those First Act VW guitars for a song. Back in late 2007 my band at the time played the Oktoberfest in Kansas City, MO. The stage we played on was for the non oompah bands and it was sponsored by a local VW dealership. The requirement was that we had to play a VW First Act guitar during one of our songs. Our other guitar player tried it and said no way. Me, being game for anything, decided to take one for the team. It wasn't a bad guitar. It was tissue paper light and had a flat fretboard not unlike most Ibanezs. Sound was OK. I jumped around and played her hard for that one song. A very unique experience.

The first time I was in Mexico back in the early nineties I saw a lot of Beetles and heard they were cheap. When I asked why you don't see them pouring across the boarder, the whole issue of them not being able to pass emission standards in the States came up.
Gaolee Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 There's a guy trying to sell one of those VW guitars on Craigslist up here. I think they called it a Garage Master or something. He's put it up for sale off and on for quite a while with no takers. I don't know his asking price, since it's hardly something I would be interested in, but they definitely do exist and apparently some have migrated away from the car they came with. They will be just another cheezy guitar nobody wants one of these days.

TommyK Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 A little 'net perusal reveals that this Les Paul, double cut like guitar has 3 pot knobs with a VW logo on top with what appear to be tire tread knurling. There is also a VW as a 12th fret marker. While the headstock is FA all the way, the TRC has a hand gesture which mimmicks a V stacked on a W. Good thing they didn't abbreviate Garage Master. The ones I've seen here on the 'net are white with scratch guards to match the body panels of the VW automobile they were bundled with.
