fretplay Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I bought this album last year but found it depressing. I have picked it up again and realize how good it is and how the songs grow on you. Just wondering if any members have picked up on this and if played any? I like 'Come Home' can't find the chords I like 'Chains of Love' but can't get the first bit on Gmaj7 Any thoughts here?

It's a great album by a top artist IMO..."Invisible Riverside" and "Kindness" are out of this my FAV's from this album.. He really makes his HAMONY Laddrer braced guitars sing...Easy to pick up and jam to as well. Make sure you bring your CAPO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZnIQODABtw

jrplefty Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Where is a good place to start listening to this guy? I have Ashes & Fire, and on first casual listen didn't find it depressing at all really, and I'm really digging his acoustic style. I would like to hear more, but he doesn't have a small discography. Any thoughts on where to begin?
Tiny Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Ashes & Fire is a great tune. I've learned to play it in G, capo 3rd fret (so it's in Bb). Pretty easy, just G, C, D and maybe an Em in there. Play the G 320003, with your ring finger on 6th, so you can do the hammers on the 2nd and 3rd frets. Strum the heck out of it!

Any thoughts on where to begin? I find the thing with Ryan Adams is he puts out a ton of music, and about 1/3 of it is really good. The other 2/3, I can take it or leave it. I actually think the new album is one of the strongest. I also like Gold, Heartbreaker and Easy Tiger, but the best way might be perusing specific songs on youtube: Two, Mockingbirdsing, My Sweet Carolina, Rescue Blues, When the Stars Turn Blue are good'ns.

Any thoughts on where to begin? Heartbreaker Jacksonville City Nights Gold (if you like a little slicker production) Cold Roses If you hunt around there is a ton of unreleased stuff that is just as good or better than the official releases. The guy is a songwriting machine. But yeah, sometimes he needs an editor.
Cpt. Crash Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 heartbreaker classic cd True! I find the thing with Ryan Adams is he puts out a ton of music, and about 1/3 of it is really good. Even more true. My best bet will be heartbreaker (& gold as it is very accessible).
jrplefty Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Thanks for the feedback. I will see what I can find locally. CD stores and CDs are both getting a lot harder to come by
jchabalk Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Ashes and Fire, you can learn the song pretty easily from this version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBWAYnRN6dM

blindboygrunt Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 i dont think there's many like him, he has the chance of taking the torch and getting his name up there with the best of them, he's still a young guy . he's prolific as hell and , while that runs the risk of not being brilliant all the time , not all neil youngs catalogue is genius , but ....... and incidentally if you're looking his cd's then his band whiskeytown's album 'strangers almanac' is as good as any of his solo releases and if you have ever tried to sing and play guitar ,never mind in front of a crowd , then this is a lesson. sometimes i feel i may as well give up , this was one of those moments . even neil finn is full of admiration also ties in with the storytellers thread :-)
Gio Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 This is one of my favorites....and with some Gibson thrown in as a bonus... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImXTJe8MxQI
Gio Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Oh, and this one is fantastic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY_3nO_wl1E I have bought the Cowboy Junkies' "Trinity Revisited" cd and although I really prefer the original '88 recording, this is a gem of the new version.

Spot Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 dunno why he got rid of the 'bird , suits him so well ...Lets not forget his lovely Country Western from the Iconic New York, New York video (Like mine!!!) Recently he has gone down the '70's Harmony Sovereign route which I think really suits his sound. Man can he make those cheap flat tops sing!!! Harmony Sovereign "Jet Set" and the Silvertone 3219 "Buck Owens"
littlejohnny Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 just like to add these, great songs, great musicians: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW-_vOKxRfs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H66wBFQAqPU
jchabalk Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 i would recommend starting clean with whiskeytown. those are 3 great releases right there. they'll start you off just right and roll you gently into the solo stuff. just go in order and you'll be fine.
