Variety Is The Spice of Life - Or Is It?

The recent discussions of who plays Gibson, Martin, and Taylor got me a thinkin'. Just curious as to how many monikers adorn the headstocks of your guitars.

At last count I am holding at seven - Gibson, National, Kay Kraft, Harmony, Slingerland, First Hawaiin Conservatory of Music (basically an Oscar Schmidt Stella),and Epiphone. My Epi is a pre-Gibson guitar but I would say Gibson Epis as well as Kalamzoos, Cromwells and what have you would count. I also have a late 1920s Regal parlor guitar but it is not playable at the moment as I need to get a bridge for it. Come to think of it I also have a Radio Tone lap guitar in the closet but it is a total mess and I probably ain't gonna spend any time or money getting it fixed up.

While I still own a bunch of electrics from a 61 Melody Maker twin/double cut, 79 SG, 91 Tele, 07'ES-339, 08 Studio, etc, etc, I currently only own 1 acoustic. My J-45 RW/ebony has been the perfect guitar.

But, there is a little Taylor Cedar Grand Concert I've been eyeing for a while. It's just a little ripper I must say.......

Variety for me is the spice of life, no doubt about that.

Curently three brandes in the stable, but I can definitely see an Eastman and a Collings there in the future. Maybe even, shock horror, a Taylor ... Im kinda fond of the GS Mini for a campfire, cottage guitar.

As much as I'd love another guitar or two in the stable it prob won't be for a long time yet. I'd love a Hummingbird TV. Other brands just don't do it for me. I don't gig or play in a band and to be honest I don't get to practise/play as much as I would like to at home - so a second is prob way more than I'll ever need. No harm in dreaming though.

Acoustics in the herd....

2011 Gibson Hummingbird TV VOS

1980 Fender FJ-70 TSB Jumbo

1984 Takamine F-360S

I have only one electric guitar.............................. a black '89 Les Paul Standard :)

BM classical, unknown other classical, Hondo Les Paul copy, Lyon by Washburn dread, Epiphone Casino, Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion III and Woody Guthrie SJ. Plus my sister-in-law's no-name Eastern Bloc acoustic. Most of them are in storage in the UK. Only the Gibsons, the Lyon and the guitar-in-law are with me. Oh and my daughter's red Chinese half-size classical. Would quite like to narrow my own list down to two brands really - the Gibsons and one cheap campfire. The Lyon is just fine for the latter at present, but its frets are wearing and it will never be worth a refret. So in an ideal world it will eventually be replaced by something more interesting - say a Busker Cannon. Oh, and I'd like an electric beater for rough-house gigs and outdoors, but there I'd choose a Gibson in the form of one of the 2007 model Melody Makers. Nice brand, cheap price. A Tele would be nice for that job, but the good ones are more expensive than the MM. Ah, to be a satisfied two-brand owner!

Gibson, Martin, Vintage Kay, Washburn, Bruno.........I look at it this way, no golfer would go out and play a round with only drivers in his bag....different shots require different clubs......same with music, different guitars give different sounds.....gotta love that variety...in my opinion, you don't play a BRAND, you play a guitar. Sound first, brand further down the list.

This pretty much sums up my life at the moment. I have managed, however, to acquire a number of guitars in between paying for diapers and sippy cups! But that probably won't happen again for a while considering bun #3 is in the oven now.

As to my acoustics, all are Gibsons except a Martin travel guitar and a Taylor 110 that I bought when I started getting back into playing after a 10 year hiatus. Oh, and a vintage 1930 National Triolian resonator! All of my electrics are Gibson, though I would love to have a Telecaster some day.

I agree, but I've not found anything that sounds like a Gibson slopeshoulder. (Never had the pleasure of the new Blueridge BG40 or Recording King RAJ 27, mind.)
