Forbana
Hey guys, I am new to Gibson in general and I have an offer to trade what is told to me a late 70's or early 80's Gibson SG for another guitar. Looks a little clean to be 30 years old. The serial number he has given me is 39103961, which I can't find on Guitar Dater Project or really any information at all. Can anyone here decode? Thanks! It's not right for a Gibson. The 8 digits is correct for the time period, but not in that order, which would have it being made on the 910th day of 1933. Could be an Epiphone serial number, but I'm not sure if 3 is a legit factory number. Have him verify the serial number again. Or post some pictures of it so we can see. Right now I'd be cautious. mickey67vet
Correct that an eight digit serial number should be applied for Gibsons. The first and fifth digit should decode the year of manufacture. The second, third and fourth digit should denote the calendar day of manufacture. The seventh and eight digits denote the number manufactured that day. By your serial number then the guitar was made in 1933 but they did not start making SG's until 61. Something is wrong.
rainbowdemon427
Doesn't sound right to me, like the other guys say, the serial number seems incorrect. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it generally is.
BobB
Send pictures to service@gibson.com. With a serial number like that, it may be an illegal counterfeit.
