krep
I have been looking at a new LP JR. Are the new ones a decent guitar for an experienced player, or should I look at an older model. Are the electronics, finish, hardware as good on the new ones?? I know it is a dumb question, but I see new VOX amps, and am disappointed, and the new American stratocasters reek. Unfortunately, no one around here plays a JR, so I need some good feedback before I drop some bucks... thank you.
Lazerface
I wouldn't buy a jr with that obeche fingerboard. I got a 2007 jr with ebony :)
SugarBear
Depends on what you mean by "older". Recent LP Jrs are decent guitars, I don't know about these new fingerboard woods yet but you should be able to find a recent one with rosewood. I have a 2000 model, also used to have a '57...there are differences, but I sold the '57 as the '00 did the trick just as well.
Malchik
Arguably, the new gloss juniors have the best finish we've seen on USA models in years, and All Gibsons share the same P-90. The Obeche fingerboard is definitely not up to rosewood in my opinion, but your getting a guitar for under a grand. I actually suggest buying the Billie Joe signature. It's a better junior for a couple extra bucks. I wouldn't buy a jr with that obeche fingerboard. I got a 2007 jr with ebony :) I wouldn't buy one with a "faded" finish. It's just a fancy word for cheap crap.
LPDEN
For the $699 I paid, I thik the this Junior with the Gloss finish is a nice or nicer than prior year Juniors I have owned. As a player, I find no negative tonal or performance attributes of the newer Obeche wood species currently being used for it's fingerboard. Here's a pic of mine....:
lespauljr
i have a 2009 junior and think its pretty decent. however there is nothing to the finish, it will come off quickly. i have owned the guitar from new for about a year, and it looks like a relic, or it is 'roadworn' already. it has no paint left on the neck. however this is purely asthetic and does not affect the playability... i actually quite like the look too :) also, give the guitar a thourough check before you buy, i think one of my machine heads is dodgy and i could be looking at a costly replacement. charlie brown
Best thing is, to go out and play, as many as you can, and decide which on YOU like. It's the only real way, to be sure. CB
Danner
I would miss the rhythm pick-up too much.
bigtim
I played one today at the music shop- a 2009 black one. It sounded real nice with that one pick up but I found myself reaching for the pick up selector a couple of times(just a bad habit of mine I guess) but overall I thought it was real nice. I had forgotton how much they weigh too and was surprised at it when I pulled it out of the hanger. Still a nice little axe though. Tim

G McBride
I have a 1987 and a 2009 both sunburst. They are both good guitars but they have their differences. Finish on the older one is smooth where the new one is porous and not as shiny. Frets are smaller on the older guitar. They both play well just a little different. You would probably be happy with a new one.
