John Haitt and Lyle Lovett Tour

Just got back from seeing John Haitt and Lyle Lovett. Great. Show.

These two guys sat side by side and took turns playing songs. First one then the other. Both are great songwriters and wonderful entertainers and it was fun to see them side by side with their own styles. Just singing and playing flat tops. No bands. No gimmicks. Just guys and guitars.

I'm a huge John Haitt fan and I went with a pal who's a big Lyle Lovett fan. We both walked away with one similar impression. Haitt's J-45 sounded horrible compared to Lovett's Collings. The 45 was quacky and it made the Collings sound lush by comparison. Not just by comparison...the Collings did sound lush and crisp. Just a beautiful tone from the Collings. Not so much from the 45.

John also played what looked like an older LG model...which sounded great compared to the 45. It sounded big and guitar-y. No quack at all.

The other odd thing was there was almost no musical interplay between the two musicians...Haitt played leads on a couple Lovett songs and Lovett sang a verse or two of Haitt's "Thing Called Love" but other than that it was two solo acts performing on the same stage. Would have liked to see some musical interaction...

Still it was a great way to spend the evening....

I would love t see that show!

I am sure the pickup systems made a big difference in the two guitars, unless they were just micing the guitars.

Johns guitar has and ellipse blend in it. Lyle used to use a sunrise and possibly blended with another source. The ellipse will quack and the Sunrise will not. If you are playing live alot?? The right pickup makes a huge difference.

That's what my friend and I talked about after the show. I'm sure it was the pickups...I know the guitars had to sound different up close and personal. And no, the guitars were not miced...had to be electronic choice that made the difference. Lyle had to be using a dual source system...i don't beleive any UST would sound like that. I wondered if John had a fishman in his guitar...it had that generic fishman sound to it.

The difference between the two sounds were just so stunning...out there alone and nekkid...one after the other. I bet the fishman would be okay if it was played in a band setting but out there solo....yuck.

I saw them here in San Antonio, maybe 5 months ago. They were absolutely fantastic! Hiatt did "Tennessee Plates", Lovett did "South Texas Girl" - which are both stellar. There was actually quite a lot of interplay between the two that night - kidding each other, and complimenting each other. Maybe one of they was coming down with something the night they played Durham. This is one of the 2 or 3 shows I'd go to every time I could!

And, I thought both their guitars sounded great. Don't remember them playing but one each! Jim

There was banter and joking between songs....I just would have liked it had they played music with each other a bit more...since they were on the same stage an all!

Sorry, I misunderstood -yes, when they were here they didn't play many 'duets'. a couple or 3 if memory serves. I agree, picking out a signature song for each and doing it together would be cool.
