milod
Rob... Yeah, but those young ladies are young enough to be my granddaughters were I to have any. <grin> And most of 'em don't even know I'm a picker. OTOH, all know I'm a photographer... Groupies always scared me away even when I was full of hormones at 19. I was into neither disease nor paternity. On the other hand, back in the folkie days prior to Youtube and a lotta different ways to learn guitar, there were stories about girl guitar players who'd date guys long enough to learn their pickin' tricks - and move on to the next. Hmmmm. Never happened to me, though. Krock... I'll add that I think in the "old days" girls had fewer opportunities for self-generated status compared to nowadays, and a degree of perceived status came from who they were dating or whatever. Status is a strange concept, and also varies by individual and/or groups. Having "dated" 150 guys from 150 bands might bring a certain form of "status" for a girl in some groups and bring the opposite of status in another. m

I can imagine....you noticed that I didn't include photog's in my anslysis of occupations that don't have groupies.... I can imagine they do/can....as do doctors, (but they're called nurses), and politicians, (they're called interns). I wish I'd stayed away from 'em...... but damn! There's a thread about musician jokes running now..... and this is a true story..... we were doing a show down in Monterey. There were a bunch of young girls up against the stage eyeballing us..... on break our drummer said, "Did you see all those girls out front looking at me?".... he just couldn't understand that they just might be looking at all of us! (and as I reacall, at least one of them set her sights on me!).
J.R.M.30!
No they don't, they're just thinking about their cat or dog when being photographed in explicit scenes that make men believe that they're into them, their guitar and Rock and Roll. The guitar might as well be a broom to alot of women in these pictures that rake in mega moola. In thee end that's all anybody cares about is it? The real questions is do men find these types of women attractive?
milod
Well... I obviously didn't. I think most of 'em likely grew up, but... not all. I always figured I'd get along best with girls who liked me, not my stage persona which varied sometimes depending on music style. m

milod
Actually, and here's something some of the younger guys might consider... It's not that uncommon that a girl musician and a guy who get together at one point in life may not work that well later as she finds a new pathway into a music career that the guy isn't interested in following the road she's chosen. Seen it more times than some of the guys might imagine. m
heymisterk
Overall, yes. But it might be just as much the passion, talent, and focus as it is the guitar playing itself. I am 40 and single, and my last long-term girlfriend was a singer in a wedding party band, and she couldn't have given two sh*ts about my playing, but she didn't give two sh*ts about anything. That said, I will say there is a core 20-30% of women who seem to exhibit "excited" behavior when I start strumming the acoustic.

LarryUK
I married a groupie. When the music ended, the hate set in. I'll give one piece of advice to the young ones. If you want to get on in life. Don't get married or let a woman get her grips on you. It may work for a small percentage. But I'd say from experience keep it in your trousers!!! Gaolee
I dunno. As a bass player most of the time, I find women who play guitar like having me around and the rest don't much notice. That's fine with me. My wife seems to like it when I play guitar, but she didn't know I had one when we met.
cavsrock08
I'm actually very glad you've asked. *Steps up on Soap box* In my personal experience...not even a little. Think of what is on the radio and charts now? Mostly pop and hip-hop. Those are the guys who I have found most girls attracted to. An example of this is, my poster of SRV in the dorm room is rarely mentioned unless a girl goes "who is that?" However, plastered through out the dorm are posters of half naked hip hop artist. I think this reasoning is pretty clear. Next to mention is we live in an age now where everyone thinks they can do everything. That includes play guitar. I am surrounded by yahoo's who think they can play. "Cool bro you can play 'smells like teen spirit." Most girls I know never think twice about my playing because everyone they know either "plays" or "can do the song better in Guitar Hero" I have never met a girl that was attracted because I played (along with other reasons of course). In fact most girls think on the weekends I wear ladies jeans and play acoustically at the local starbucks when I mention my guitar playing. (not that there is anything wrong with playing acoustically. However ladies jeans...) Now keep in mind, this is coming from a...frustrated 19 year old college freshman who hasn't seen field in a while so I am sure my arguments are obviously a little skewed. However, those are my observations. TL:DR Girls dont give a damn if anyone plays guitar because guitar isn't interesting to girls anymore. *steps off soap box*
brundaddy
It's not the guitar that attracts females. It's the swagger and the hustle, which some guitar players happen to have. When you combine swagger & hustle with the talent for serenading, it's often a winning recipe.
retrosurfer1959
I was a high school and college athlete Football Player, Played Guitar, and then even wore a couple of different Uniforms all while I was in the dating years before marriage so my friends always said I cheated and i would say yeah being a athlete, playing guitar and wearing a uniform all worked to meet a lot of girls. And everyone always said the same thing it was all attitude I was very sure of myself and was always having fun so they automatically joined the party. The easiest gimmick was a uniform if I'm being honest I always thought it was a joke but doing bar checks in uniform as a young police officer was a real experience women loved it especially as a SWAT officer for some reason especially young wild girls (the kind I liked at that time) loved the uniform they would hand you there phone numbers right in front of their boyfriends. My wife to be rode with me once and it was almost enough to stop the marriage she followed me doing a bar check one night and I guess the girls thought she worked with me or something she had 11 phone numbers a pink thong girls handed her to give to me later and a total look of disgust by the time we left the bar the funny part is she turned around at the front of the bar and dumped the whole collection in the trash can in front of all the girls and then took my arm as we left the bar with her laughing the whole way out. I didn't even know what it was about till later but it still caused a pretty good argument. women are just like men we all like something different so be different in as many ways as you can even if it doesn't help it keeps life interesting.
