rick48195
Hello Gibson Forum, I am a new member and would like to pick the brain of some of you, I have an original 1965 Melody Maker with double pickups and tremolo bar, I have had this since I was twelve years old, It was brand new then, I'm positive it is not a Gibson clone, It was bought from a very respectable dealer named Weaver's in Allen Park, Michigan in 1965, I cannot find serial numbers on it anywhere, Any of you ever heard of this before? Thanks Rick48195
Searcy
It should be right on the back of the head stock.
rick48195
Ive looked at the rear of the headstock from every angle in every kind of light you can imagine and still see no serial numbers,
Ryan H
Well, if you want confirm whether it's a true 1965 Gibson, then here's one other Potential solution. Take the pickguard off. Look at the backs of the potentiometers. There should be a series of numbers along the edge. They should begin in either 137 (CTS) or 134 (Centralab). The next 2 numbers are the year the pots were manufactured in (normally either the previous year, or the year the guitar was made). The last 2 numbers are the week of that year that the pots were made. If they're some off-brand pots (Alpha, for example) there's a good chance it's a knockoff..no serial number and cheap pots is a red flag. Generally, if it's CTS or Centralab and the dates match, it's authentic. -Ryan
Searcy
I can't imagine anyone making a knock off of a MM in 1964. There's a chance it was a factory worker project since you have had it since 1965 and it was local to the Gibson factory.
Ryan H
True...still never hurts to check. Somebody could have just forgotten to inkstamp this one...

DestructorsKillMusic1982
I highly doubt it would be a knockoff, but I do remember Hondo making some very close MM replicas in the late 70s

Ryan H
Looks to be legitimate. I have a '64 that's almost identical, but it's a sunburst and doesn't have the trem. I don't know what to say, they ink stamped the serial # back then, so maybe it wore off. I'm 99% sure it's legit. -Ryan
