spaceboy Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 I'd like to get a new Les Paul in the near future. I tried out a Les Paul Standard (2007) with a 60's slim neck - however, I found the neck too wide for my taste (I have two guitars - Yamaha acoustic and a Kramer F1000 with slim necks that I like). I really love the sound of a Les Paul, and do want to get one badly. Do you have a recommendation on which LP has the "thinest" neck - even thinner than a 60's slim neck? Note: I'm okay with the depth of the 60's slim neck, however, I found the fretboard too wide. Thanks, Rob.

Give it a chance it may grow on you... I don't think Gibson offers a LP with a thinner neck than the 60's neck now. If you do want a very slim neck you might want to try an older SG... My 71's neck is almost too thin...
scozz Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 As far as fretboard width is concerned, I believe all LPs are the same. I think if you buy a LP you will find that in the long run the width of the neck will not be a problem at all. In fact, I believe after a short while you will find it MORE comfortable and more to your liking than thinner necks.
Ian Martin Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 +1 on what scozz said. There can always be a little bit of a learning curve when jumping brands or different types of guitars as the manufacturers all make them a little differently, but honestly you'll adapt QUICKLY. It doesn't get much better than a '60s neck or a Gibson fretboard.
rjay777 Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 I concur. You have to give yourself a chance to warm up to those necks. Actually I'm surprised you feel the 60's slim-tapered is too wide. Luckily for me I can get used to any style, but I'll admit switching between a Les Paul Classic and a Fender Amer. Std always feels a bit awkward HAHA. If you want slimmer, you might have to delve into the super-strat world. ie Jackson, Ibanez RG.
spaceboy Posted November 9, 2008 Author Posted November 9, 2008 Thanks for the feedback everyone. I've been playing the Kramer F1000 for about 17 years and the Yamaha acoustic for a couple of years. I agree that it will take some time adjusting to the new neck style on the Gibson LP. How does the asymetrical neck on the 2008 LP Standard compare to the 60's slim neck? I do plan on trying one out, but am curious in the meantime what others think about the asymetrical neck feel. Rob.
cajunman831 Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 I tried the asymetrical neck on a 2008 LP Plus.i loved it.But,had to return it to GC due to cosmetic problems and bought a custom instead with MF.
littlekenny Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 1957 Reissue lol, I'm sure that will fit for him just fine
FennRx Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 lol' date=' I'm sure that will fit for him just fine[/quote'] lol i couldnt resist
:oilpit: Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 grow a pair and deal with the 60's neck... Either that or sand it down, but I think the first will be easier.
zachd33 Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 I went from a really skinny wizard II neck on my Ibanez RG to my 2008 LP studio. I had a few problems adjusting to the neck at first, but i notice now that I am used to it, whenever I pick up my old Ibanez it just feels that much easier to play. So +1 to Gibson for making me a better guitarist.
GuitarJunkie Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 The custom neck profile on the Slash signatures might be what you're looking for.

spaceboy Posted March 6, 2009 Author Posted March 6, 2009 Okay - I have an update to thread...like oilpit recommended, I "grew a pair" and got the LP Studio Wine Red Chrome today!! Really sweet guitar...I ended trying out a bunch of different LPs over the past couple of months and finally decided to get the Studio. The neck is different but comfortable, and I'm use to it now :) Thanks for all the great tips everyone (even you too oilpit
