Tim Plains
Without caps, your tone pots are useless.
thejay
They actually control the sound/tone quite a bit... I swapped the stock in my Explorer for another brand and WOW what a difference. Really opened up the sound.

Yes you absolutly need the caps! As others have said, if you do not use them then you have no tone control. Since you're in the Les Paul forum, I guessing you're going to wire this into a Les Paul. Once you open up your LP or any other guitar for that matter, you will find they all have caps. As others also have stated, you may want to try a different brand of cap. Also, since you're going to split the coils you may even want to try a higher value of cap. When I wired my LP this way I think I put around a .047 in the bridge pick-up and .022 in the neck (I may have that backwards.... I forget). Does the tone controls actually change the tone of the guitar?

:oilpit:
i have an epiphone LP and it doesnt have caps???? I think you do, and just don't know it... do the tone controls do anything? if they don't then you may be right, but, I'm pretty sure you are mistaken
nikko18
well they do work but there is nothing inside the control cavity besides the pots and a bunch of wires. maybe epis have really small caps or something or theyre built into the pots. anyways i know i need them now so ill order some from ebay later this week along with my bigsby
rmngretsch14
The capcitors in an epi are tiny red rectangles they should be going between your volume potentiometer and tone one, or sometimes on epiphones they are oddly attached on just the tone pot (don't remember how)
