Facebook question

I've been trying to locate an old pal, former lead-guitar player. Suddenly his name shows up as being on Facebook. I can't explain why but I have an aversion to FB and have no desire to join. Is there a way to connect with a FB member without actually going through the membership process? Thanks.

I'm on Facebook 'cause my son put his wedding photos there....now he's divorced but I'm still there!

Only people from the Forum I'm friends with are ol' Fred and Linda Adams.

LOL! Well, give my kindest regards to ol' Fred and Linda. How much of a pita has your FB membership been for you?

Hey Cruz, the latest social site rage is AssBook. They don't show faces on this site. Would you like me to send you an invite?

some folks have their contact info available on their page. Click on info. This only works if'n you're member and a person accepts your friend request allowing you to view their page. so, to answer your question, no.

Thanks, jannus, I've been doing some homework and it appears you're correct. 'Preciate that. [thumbup]

Dennis, FB isn't all that bad. Other than two cousins and one very old friend from school all of my contacts on FB are musicians. Makes it easy to keep up with what they're doing for gigs and scheduling SANSJAM

Thanks, Fred, I'm looking into how limited one can keep the relationship with them and still be a member.

I imagine that you have to join it to use all of the options that are available. Don't know what you can do with it if you're not signed-up with them. Of course, once you sign-up (and it is free) you don't have to use it except for finding the people you want. Beyond that, you don't have to do anything. Just sign-in when you want to. I've been on it for around a year now. Don't live there, but I do use it to promote my gigs. In all sincerity, I've contacted or been contacted by folks I'd lost track of and many of them are coming to my shows. I've heard and even experienced some of the complaints about Facebook, but all-things-considered, it's been a positive experience for me. One thing I must mention though is that it can be confusing-as-hell. They change things without warning. But again, I have found some uses for it. Good luck, my friend..........And if you look for me on there, just look for Larry Garrett, in Independence, Mo. [thumbup]

You can post as little or as much info about yourself as you wish, the trick is limiting who has access to the info. Friends only, friends of friends, or public.

I'm definitely not a FB guy. Have no desire to get on it at all. Good luck trying to contact that person, if you're not a member.

Me neither. It seems it's a network of an overly obsessive means of concern of other people's lives.... E-mail works much better for my liking.

You have to watch yourself and not get immersed in it. It can be addictive. If you want to keep it for a few family and friends, it's cool, but watch yourself. I got sucked into it at first, but now I don't visit it anymore. The only thing I check about once a week is my music page. It is different. I have it set up for only me posting things, so nobody can post on my wall. I think another member here, that I know, at least, has a facebook musician page also.

I did have an "alias" profile before, only b/c a friend had posted H.S. pics of us and wanted to check them out. Anyway, you can try the "alias" thing as an alternative. And go into the "privacy" menu to set what you want for public and private access.

Actually I don't think there is, unless his FB page displays his email address. Professional to garage bands use FB to great success in attracting and keeping fan interest, so if there's a musician in your past who could possibly be still gigging, they are most probably on FB. But one could always establish a FB account, lie about everything (I have). Never admit to having attended, let alone graduated from anything from anywhere. Post no hobbies or interests. DO NOT admit any familial relationships, although FB now has a work-around. UGH! There's a reason my ads try to interest me in walkers, canes, retirement investments and otherwise leave me the @#O*(@#)(* alone. [sneaky]

Set your privacy settings as high as you can and don't fall for the BS that doing so will make you less friendly.

Make the contact, then either leave the account dormant... or just kill it.

And for GOD sakes, to play those stupid Farmville, or anythingville games. The first thing they ask you for before playing is your private information and/or access to it. The second thing it does is invite your 'friends' and family to play by offering them free game 'stuff', in YOUR NAME without your doing a thing, thereby using your good name to sucker your friends and family into relinquishing their privacy.

Having a high 'friend' count is not a goal to be achieved. It is a score attained by suckers.

Someone once said, "If you use a service for 'free', YOU and your private information are the product being sold."

I like face book. My family is all over the world and FB allows me to keep in touch with them fast. Also, folks that follow Searcy String Works on facebook get first crack at special deals on oddball pickups and unclaimed repairs as well as a peek inside the show from time to time.

It's just how the world works.

I went, I saw, I joined, with trepidation.

I provided the bare minimum data. I set all the privacy settings on friend only.

Within just a few minutes my home page was littered with dozens of suggested friends...many of whom are known to me.

Trust me, as soon as my old bud replies to my contact, I'm balin' on FB.

Thanks for all the suggestions and thoughts, guys. I understand this is how the world supposedly works now.

Not for me, thanks. I didn't move out here in the woods so I could have the whold freakin' world in my face. [thumbdn]

The Beatles AND Metallica are mo' bettah than Facebook. [thumbup]
