malsshakeyleg Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Afternoon all I've just bought a second hand Angus Young Signature SG, the first issue which according to Gibson is dated as 2000. Anyway, I'm not much clued up on technical stuff and hoped someone could give me some thoughts on this photograph of the headstock. The guitar looks and plays lovely but the Gibson logo on the headstock looks a bit edgy for want of a better word. Is this down to normal ageing and (as my brother in law says) lacquer cracking ? Any thoughts appreciated Thanks A
SlashPerryBurst Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Hi. I'm not 100% sure for the reason for this. You don't need to worry though. I've owned several Gibsons and this has happened to two of them.
pfox14 Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 That's definitely some sloppy inlay work on such an expensive guitar.
sellen Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 That inlay looks croppy. But as you say the rest of the guitar is great, so congrats with the angus sig and welcome to the forum. Please Post more picks of it, i like those early angus signature sg's
malsshakeyleg Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 Will do, just cleaning and restrining it at the moment. After several different verdicts i've just put the headstock problem down to lacquer cracking Not the end of the world!
SGFan2 Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 malsshakeyleg, Could it not be caused by the different "movement" of the wood and the acrylic when the guitar is subjected to variations in temperature? Is it only visible at the logo or at the other acrylic inlays as well? Cheers, SGFan2
sg50 Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 It could also be caused by sloppy Chinese counterfeiting manufacturing. While we're on about possibilities. not that such a thing could ever happen
malsshakeyleg Posted April 5, 2012 Author Posted April 5, 2012 Just the Gibson logo mate. Beneath that is the Angus caricature which is fine I've double checked all bits to make sure it's not a cheap copy. I'm happy to say it's definitely not.

malsshakeyleg Posted April 5, 2012 Author Posted April 5, 2012 I'm pretty sure that's what he was getting at ... a bit of sarcasm. Those fakes from the Far East do look pretty good these days
sellen Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 a few more photos off my phone Looks cool One of these days....

SlashPerryBurst Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I'm pretty sure that's what he was getting at ... a bit of sarcasm. Those fakes from the Far East do look pretty good these days You'd be surpised. A well known member on this very forum once thought a video of a Chinese factory making counterfeit Gibsons was evidence that Gibson had some models made in China. As for the fakes, they are getting better and better. Visually that is. It's not too difficult to spot a fake if you know what to look for. I saw one suspect looking guitar in Ochanomizu. For the record, there are 1000's of guitars in Ochanomizu and 100's of les pauls. I spotted one that had a tiny telltale sign of forgery.
Nick Beach Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 Looks cool One of these days.... I agree. Although my taste have change quite a bit over the years Angus was the one who made me want to play guitar when I was 5 or 6, so I'm going to get one of these older models eventually. These had Angus sig pups right?

malsshakeyleg Posted April 8, 2012 Author Posted April 8, 2012 Another nice feature of this guitar is it's quite a bit heavier than my Standard SG. Feels lovely
Saxosim Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Another nice feature of this guitar is it's quite a bit heavier than my Standard SG. Feels lovely Congratulations the Angus SGs are great I would love one of those one day, the early ones seem to be getting harder to find now and especially in great condition like yours looks to be. Enjoy it :)
