slavestate
Hello there, There is an Epiphone Genesis for sale locally for $600, and I have a general fretboard question before I dive into trying it out. This particular guitar has a "lightly scalloped" fretboard, in the words of the owner. The neck has binding as well, and I just wanted to see if the scalloped effect was from extensive use and playing, or was it a feature of this particular model? If it's scalloped due to wear, I must consider another option. Thank you!
stein
That's a question you have to ask the 'owner'. Does HE mean there is light wear on the fretboard? or has it been "scalloped" with a file? I don't know of any factory Gibby or Epi that has any "scalloping" done to it as a feature.

That Genesis is also listed on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/...c#ht_2124wt_905 None of the original Genesis models had scalloped fretboards, so it appears that it was altered intentionally: Book value on the Deluxe model in excellent condition is $450, so IMHO it should be assessed lower due to the modifications. You could also hold out for one of the reissues coming out in September which will be in roughly the same price category: http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/81917-epiphone-genesis-reissue-review-demo/

It looks more like damage caused by an improper fret job, or something of that nature. You can see the frets either lifted or not making contact with the fretbaord. And the binding at the frets looks messed up to say the least.
slavestate
Another one I will have to consider passing on. I didn't notice they were selling it on eBay. They have an extensive collection of instruments, so perhaps this isn't the one. Thank you for all of your comments.
