Rabs
Now im not sure if Gibson do this the same way (probably do) but I had always wondered how they do the swirl effect (even though I dont really like it as a finish).. I had always pictured the workers bringing their kids in for a finger painting session :P lol.... These vids explain all.. very interesting :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFUZaMPPut0&feature=related

bonzoboy
Very cool videos, thanx for posting,I guess they must do the bowling ball effect pretty well the same way but by using more colours.

krock
I cant use that technique on my pedals because its a bit of a waste when you're only doing 1 every few months. Instead I just sand down the case, put primer on it. Then a load of different colours and then just swirl them all around with a stick. I then put clear coat over the top. It still looks cool, its just easier and cheaper

Californiaman
In the early '80s Fender did the Bowling Ball Finish on Telecasters and Stratocasters. It only lasted a year. It's a rare finish if you can find one. See here...
