Folks ,

I was wondering if there are any surviving instruments (mandolins or guitars or anything) built by Orville Gibson .

I know Epiphone has a museum where there is stuff from the house of Stathopoulos but I don't know if Gibson has anything

or is there stuff in private collections that any of you may know of .

thanks

Yes there are. . there is a Guy that lives in Idaho that has a 1896 or 7 Gibson harp Guitar.. Mother of Pearl and ebony rope Bound, the Moon/crest inlay on the peg head.. and signed inside the Guitar.. One of the nicest around... I also know of a almost same year mandolin that is just the coolist you would ever see.. Both very Playable..

Yes, there are a number of surviving mandolins and guitars. The summer issue of Fretboard Journal will feature my article about my project of X-raying guitars. One of the instruments featured in the article is this Orville guitar;

It's a beautiful instrument that I had in my home for a few days while scheduling the X-ray session. Very playable and while not very loud, it has a sweet tone.
