absolutely, total difference in sound and volume. the 96 is a beast compared to the 76 dove.

 

Being kind of old you may be able to get decent money for it and allow you to shop for another Dove that is better for a very little more..

Maybe what was being ask of you is to photograph something like this (lay a 24" straight edge from the frets on the neck to the bridge, with the neck relief being set correctly 1st):

That way the guys can tell you what they are thinking you're describing. Old adage, pictures worth 1000 words is even more important with your question IMHO. People are trying to help best as possible it looks like for you. [biggrin]

You are correct, but it's important to stress the the straightedge needs to be pressed hard against the frets to determine where the projection of the top of the frets hits the bridge or saddle. If it hits much below the upper surface of the bridge, you have a problem. Ideally, it should probably just tick the top of the bridge. As you say, you really need to use a 24" straightedge for this, as a shorter one gives misleading results.
