With a Prius or any of the hybrids or sub compacts, it's all about where your at and what your daily drive is made up of. We had one at our downtown loft in Chicago, my wife was about 11 miles from work without any mass transit options and the drive was mostly gridlock driving at 20-25 miles per hour or downtown stop and go it was a great car we would fuel it about once a month and unless we were going somewhere on the weekends it was perfect. We were in a very urban area so walking wasn't a great idea (There were people selling blood about two building down from us, and I'm not sure they would have minded selling someone else's blood either) it was especially good for the wife running errands and everywhere we went it was usually done in the Prius.

We have a loft in Denver now and sitting in it's parking space in a Mini Cooper Clubman and it's practical and a blast to drive also so the small cars definitely have there place. Granted it might not be great for hauling hay on a ranch but for a urban runabout there pretty nice. I just sold a Honda Element and it was a great little run around car again that carried all my art supplies and a full load out of guitars and amps. My wife was kind of embarrassed to be seen in it and would not drive it but I liked it a lot.

As for the comment on Range Rovers? don't know about that one I have a Defender with 160k miles on it about half that in places a car shouldn't have been in the first place other than tires and break pads with it kind of likes to eat because of the weight the only maintenance was a car battery after 6 years which should have been on the front page in the newspaper a car battery usually last two years at the most here in Arizona to get 6 years was a freaking miracle.

the Pacer was pretty pathetic I remember they came in a light sky blue and a peachy color that looked like it should be called skinned rabbit. I dated a girl that had a Sky Blue pacer and it was like riding around in a greenhouse with all that glass she thought it was great though and was a really cute little blond exchange student form Australia and her looks combined with that accent was killing me back then. So even now I always smile when I see a picture of a Pacer.

There it is. That's it.

I had this for 2 weeks. Almost died in it. Construction is very similiar to Corvette tough: plastic body, transverse leaf spring, and exhaust noise... :) Cheers... Bence

Personally I would not knock the Prius...

An incredible piece of technology in a usable format...ideally suited to a mix of urban and longer distance travel

Regularly getting 55 mpg...

Only drawback I found was difficult roof carriage...boats etc

And the potential drawback of the transmission not permitting towing of a trailer...

When I was a little kid, my dad bought a used car called an Epic. Have no idea who made it but it soon got the nickname epidemic. A piece of junk that was always breaking down..

The worst car I've driven was a Plymouth Horizon 1979. This car fell apart piece by piece and was finished within two years from new.

I was the only person that could start it in the winter. A rivet in the choke assembly broke so no choke. Couldn't get just the broken part replaced. They wanted to install a new carburator and I had no money so I learned how to deal with it. On the plus side, I could drive through just about anything with that car.

One of my high school girl friends had a NSU, she got it stuck in the sand and four of us picked it up and carried it to the road. Looked like a Renualt Dalphine or what ever it was called, There's another piece of junk - The Renualt Le Car.....

There are, in the annals, horror stories concerning the cars emerging from British Leyland...affectionately known as 'The Austin'

At it's worst in the 70's due to misguided Socialist idealism...overmanning, militant unions, lack of focus...

Several quite good designs were spoiled by indifferent QC and poor worker attitude

Maestro, Allegro, Marina, Mini, Montego, Ambassador, Maxi, Princess...

All vie for the monika 'worst car ever'

One of the few cars where the designers pooh-poohed the more traditional round steering-wheel notion in favour of a square one instead......

Anybody remember the Chevy Vega? It sort of looked like a mini Camaro. Not a bad look, but some genius at Chevy got the bright idea that an aluminum engine block and steel piston rings was a good idea. NOT! People accused me of spraying for mosquites because of the billowing clouds of white smoke coming out of that car.

Guys! Have You ever had the luck being in a Dacia? Not? You have seen nothing yet! A friend of mine had one. Once, when He tried to change gears (it's a stick shift "car") and He reached towards the shifter...and it wasn't there. Gone together with the whole transmission...From "four on the floor" it went "hole on the floor" [biggrin] Cheers... Bence

A colleague of mine bought a new Allegro(aka 'All Aggro') and experienced the 'boot filled with water' syndrome every time it rained...

The official remedy from British Leyland was to drill holes in the boot floor to let the water out [thumbup]

Chevrolet in the 70s was like Gibson and Fender in the 70s.....

The Vega is like a car version of a Marauder or something......

"roof carriage" and "Towing" You want good gas mileage AND towing? [sneaky]

Don't we all.

The 55 mpg must be a mix of city and highway driving. I've never known a Prius to get stellar mileage when mostly driven at highway speeds.

For urban driving the Prius is the bomb, but for road trips... get something else.

Vega? Yeah, I remember it. I almost bought one once. The initial engines were dogs, but GM re-powered many of them. Trouble is with the new, cast iron block, the MPG was worse than a full size family sedan... think Buick Electra 225.
