check this out from a canadian retailer. appears to be a merger of the j45 and swd. be patient - the link takes a while to load. then go to page 3.

Clearly a special version for the canadian market.

Whats wrong with either a J45 or a SWD?

If it's true it's just ANOTHER model for the collectors to rack away

Well, if nothing else, it is at least nice to see L&M attempting to keep a half decent stock of acoustic guitar models on hand. One of the local outlets has at least a dozen and a half Gibsons on display, including a J-45 Legend, an L-00 Legend, three J-100s, to name but a few.

Time was, a number of years ago, you'd be lucky to find 3 to 5 Gibsons in stock, they would be at least 2-3 years old, at the local Canadian musical instruments retailer.

The exclusive model thing? -- whatever. Somebody will buy them hopefully based on how they sound and how they play, regardless of the marketing schtick.

Why don't they just call it a sunburst SWD? Its nothing new' date=' I recall seeing one of those on ebay last winter. I guess they have to get creative to sell that model. Can you tell I'm not a SWD fan?[/quote']

i hear ya as i just traded my swd back to l&m for a store credit. this one is mostly an swd. but, though it does not say, i'm guessing the fretboard is rw which would make a difference. i found fretted notes has a sizzle or a brightness to them i attributed to the ebony board. rw, to me, seems mellower. overall, the swd i had was closed and dampened with no signs of ever "opening up" even though i played the hell out of it. otoh, nid2007 has a VB swd that is not only absolutely beautiful looking, its his favourite as well. so, to each his own.

however, if the guitar in the ad had sloped shoulders, it would be a j45rw with an swd bridge.

Scared me more!

yes, welcome to Canadian Gibson pricing. Sadly, the price does not include an actual factory warranty either - repairs are handled by the Canadian distributor. If you need to send it to Bozeman, it is on your own dime.

Someone earlier mentioned that Long and McQuaid's Gibson stock was often 2-3 years old. Hold the press, it still is!! My AJ that I purchased one year ago today is an '05. Shelf price was $3000 - I paid $2399 plus tax and the Canadian dollar was almost at par with the US greenback at the time.

And if you think we have it bad, ask our friends in the UK what they are paying for Gibsons!

This is the one way I think Martin has an advantage over Gibson here in Canada. Martin offers the same warranty program here as in the US and most dealers are able to keep their prices in line with US dealers' offers once you convert the currency - about 2/3 the MSRP but in CDN dollars.

Ballcorner, I would have to disagree with about L&M pricing during the last year.In Vancouver and the lower mainland ( 4 newly built replacement stores ) they seem to have got their prices in line with the states fairly quickly. I bought a gretsch for the same price as US list and almost all their Gibsons were very close as well. When I bought my AJ back in Jan of this year I had to go to the states to get it because nobody had one up here ( got it for 1600 when the dollar was par ) The L&M that I frequent got an AJ in stock a few months ago and I think they are asking 2200 for it. All of their Gibson acoustics are fairly recent as well. Remember, October was "Yorkville" month so they loaded up at all their stores.

At best, I'd opine that the pricing is "uneven".

I just (like today) bought a nice drum kit from a local L&M store -- nice price, and more or less equivalent to the US price available at various drum retailers, GC included.

And, although I've seen some prices on Gibsons that were again, more or less equivalent to US prices, I've also seen some that were significantly out to lunch. Sometimes, you can shake some sense into them and have them match or nearly match other available prices, but it depends on who you end up speaking to.

agreed. the j45mc and swd at 2075cdn are only $76 more than the GC price. the AJ, however is the same price at GC and is 2499 here. there is also a sizeable gap between prices in the j200 line which may have to do with availability.

if the item in the catalogue is merely a blend of swd and j45 features, why the $400 increase on base price?
