Yet ANOTHER string question.....

By a simple twist of fate, I have wound up with two packages of Medium guage acoustic guitar strings (Elixir nanoweb). I usually only play with lights, and am wondering it I use these strings on my guitars will it require a new setup? I have a 12 fret guitar and a 14 fret guitar, which guitar would have the least effect from the mediums, set up wise that is. Also, how much HARDER is it to play with mediums than with lights (finger pain wise?) thanks for all your advice in advance....wily

In my experience the jump from light to medium has rarely necessitated a set-up. Maybe I'm just not that picky about my action. I would try them on the 14 fret first as it could handle the heavier load a little better. Check manufacturer recommendations if in doubt. I don't find mediums to be prohibitively harder from a finger strength perspective (for most applications). They take a little more effort to bend and can wear harder on soft finger tips over an extended period of play.

Mediums will almost certainly sound better. Go for it.

It will only be noticeably harder to fret for the first week.

I put mediums on my main player and it was a different guit tar... a really nicely different guit tar.

The heavier the string - The bigger the sound - but more pull on the neck - and harder to play

The lighter the string - the lighter the sound- and less pull on the neck - and easier to play

I was GM for Vinci Strings and Pres of D'Aquisto strings. Always be carefull with Heavy Strings. They are usually used by Jazz Players. They start with .013 Gauge, Rock Players usually use .009 to .042 or .010 To 046.

Acoustic Strings - the most popular Begins with .012 . Short scale acoustic guitars( 24'' ) Iwould go very light .010 Or .011 - acoustic guitars with 25 or 25 1/2 " scale use >012 . I hope this helps. Dan Duffy

I'm assuming your 12 fret has a shorter scale and therefore, when compared to a 14 fret (similarly assuming a longer scale) will produce less tenson where both guitars have the same guage string.

So, if this is true, and all other factors being equal, the mediums will be better suited to the shorter scale.

My strat has a longer scale than the 335. I use 9s on the strat and 10s on the 335. The tension feel is broadly similar.

Hey wiley - putting meds on my SJ200 MC made a world of difference in both sound and playability. The difference in sound and tonality was very apparent and worth the extra tension on the strings, while the difference and difficulty factor in playabilty was minimal. If you bend a lot, you will notice it for sure, but after a few hours on those strings the new difference in sound will carry you away and you won't notice the blood blisters on the end of your fingers lol...j/k.

The mediums do a great justice to the super jumbos. I won't put anything else on mine now.

Just my .02 cents

History shows I went through this trauma a few months ago. Haveing strung a 79 J45 with 10s since I bought it in 82.

Have to say that guitar is transformed, has a different more powerful voice.

Many advocates of 12s and 13s whio remember my dalliance shouting "I told you so"

You were right!

Keep meaning to take guiatr to be checked but it all looks hunky dory and plays fine.

As for my fingers? No worries at all haven't really noticed any difference.

If they feel sore I just pick up an electric strung with 009s!
