Our wonderful Prime Minister's future may depend on the true meaning of LOL....

Where Cameron and his cronies are concerned "Laugh Out Loud" is the last thing I'll do. Don't get me started.........

The other option is equally appealing.

It's a pretty stupid (but text-convenient) acronym whatever meaning it has....how about 'lolZ'? And yes, soon it will be possible to communicate entirely using acros, BTWFYIOMGWTFLOLIMHO....

In the 20th century we used "O.K.", which was not an acronym but an abbreviation, probably from the Choctaw or Lakota Indian languages. And we were generally too polite to 'laugh out loud' at others.

When I worked in travel I once had this terribly posh, old school customer on the phone. I was talking about a product called a Hahn pass. He asked me if Hahn was a TLA because he hated TLA's, I explained that Hahn was an unusual entity, registered as an IATA airline but did not operate flights, they buy seats in bulk from regional airlines to create these multistop air pass products. "what's a TLA?" I asked, "a Three Letter Acronym" he replied. After we both had little a chuckle at the irony he expressed surprise that I knew what an acronym was (yes, I sound young on the phone and British education standards have dropped that much). I gained a repeat customer who bought 2 first class round the world tickets twice yearly from that conversation!

Poop.

So there you go.

The story I heard was that O.K. came about as a result of a high brow ironic joke by the New York Times. I.e. it wasn't (at the time) O.K. to spell the word okay thusly: O.K.

Kind of like the TLA joke above.

To do with the London Riots last summer and just with how the Goverment are in general.. Im from East London and what they say in the video is true.. They built this whole Olympic village in one of the poorest areas in London and yet did nothing for the area apart from build pointless so called works of art that cost god knows how much. And they wonder why the people around there are peed off.
