Craig10119 Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Ok, I don't have pictures, but I'm sure we've all seen the november rain video? Right? Anyway, I was under the impression that the guitar that slash used was a tobacco burst standard. Going by other tobacco bursts I've seen, it looks a lot different... Maybe it's just faded. I'm aware that the guitar was quite old (even back then) but, money no object, what's the closest finish I could get to the one on that guitar? I'm thinking faded tobacco burst, but no doubt someone else here will know better. Any help is appreciated... Wanted one since i was 5 years old.
pippy Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 I've just checked out the video on youtube and I'm pretty certain that it's his "Perry/Slash/Perry" '59 (9 0663 if you must). If so, then, according to the caption on (appropriately enough!) page 59 of "The Beauth of the 'Burst", I quote... "What looks like tobaccoburst is actually a very dark burgundy. Very narrow burst gradation means this top has experienced considerable fading. Probably much redder when it was new. Aged and ambered clear top coat also contributes to the tobacco look". As to what we know as darkburst/tobaccoburst Yasuhiko Iwanade (author of B of the 'Burst) writes; " 'Darkburst' - Very dark sunburst. It is a burgundy or a dark wine red other than cherry...." " 'Tobaccoburst' - ...a variation of darkburst. Darkburst has more blue colourant than regular cherry sunburst. So when a darkburst fades, the result will be a more brownish hue to the sunburst." (sic) On the guitar in question there is still quite a lot of red in the lower-bout grad so any modern brown-only tobaccoburst isn't going to get too close to his one.
Craig10119 Posted November 17, 2008 Author Posted November 17, 2008 Thanks... This isn't gonna be easy. Maybe my best bet is to buy a honeyburst and have it refinished. I believe it is the perry/slash model. Thanks for the help.
pippy Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Glad to help. Incidentally, did you know that (cutting a long story short) Slash returned it to Joe Perry as a birthday present?
Craig10119 Posted November 18, 2008 Author Posted November 18, 2008 Yeah. I'd read all about that guitar. He bought it off of Perrys wife before Perry re joined aerosmith. This is gonna be a nightmare... It'll be worth it in the end though. Surprised gibson didn't release a signature of the guitar... Big slash fan. The fact that both he and perry owned it makes it seem worthy. Personally, the finish just kills me. This is a long shot pippy, but by the time I'll have the money to buy another standard and get it re finished, I'll have moved and will stay about an hours drive from london. Any chance you could recommend a good guitar tech who may even be able to do the refinishing for me?
pippy Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Sorry Craig, I don't know of any Tech. personally. Google 'Denmark Street, London' and it'll lead you to some of the best dealers in London. Give some of them a call (they all tend to be friendly) and they'll put you right. The shop that used to be Andy's has changed names but the shop's still there and they could do all that stuff for customers. Good luck hunting.
GunsNRoses23 Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 yeah but slash, before his bday didnt want to return it to joe perry but he did for his bday :D btw the guitar rocks :D

I'm moving down with my band. My bassist has promised to take me to denmark street on day one... Looking forward to it. Thats a darkburst Exactly? I want my next guitar to be a replica of the guitar. At least in terms of finish. I've just googled les paul darkburst. Looks different to me. Might just be down to fading. Craig...Looking for a good tech in London..? It'll be about 5-6 months before I move, maybe another 6 months after that until I can afford the guitar and have enough cash for the refinishing. Just need to be happy with my HCS standard and goldtop with p90's for now... I'm not actually moving to london either (I'll be about an hour away) but I figure, I'm going to want this done right, and not have someone do it half right. I figure i'd be best getting it done in london. I'll need to buy an "old" standard and not one of the new ones too... Gibson aren't exactly making this easy for me. Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll be sure to post pictures whenever the job is eventually done. In the meantime, I'll try and work on getting some photos of my other lp's.
