Life magazine on the Stones

As sometimes happens, I was perusing the magazine section at the grocery store while my better half was spending us into the poorhouse with the week's groceries. Time/Life publications had a nice "special issue" on the Stones, which has a lot of photos I had never seen from all stages of their careers, including some nice Gibson porn. Some of the guitars I had never seen before, and I had to run home to do a bit of research.

 

One photo had Keef (I'd say in the 1970's) with a natural-topped, Brazilian-backed (judging from the tiny amount you could see), square-shoulder dread with an adjustable ceramic saddle and Epiphone/LG-O style pickguard.

 

As best I can tell, this would be a 1968-'69 Heritage, which I understand was created to compete with the D-28.

 

Does anyone remember that particular Stones guitar, or has anyone here had any experience with the Heritage models? Aside from what I considered an unattractive pickguard, and maybe a narrow nut, it looked like a nice guitar. It appeared to be new in the photo.

 

Although this hundred-page photo essay is of necessity the "Reader's Digest" version of the Stones career, it was pretty interesting, and I would recommend it.

No, that's not the one. There were also some nice 'Bird photos in this book as well.

'Were' - does that mean you didn't buy the magazine. . .

If you did, please report about the bridges/saddles/years.

After all the main Q still is : What was the precise set-up for Angie, December '72.

 

My investigations narrow in on adjustable ceramic (though there were rosewood-saddles in the camp as well in the period).

Yet, I'm not sure about the guitar as they had some stolen in France and got the new natural topped one/ones, which in fact means - and I've dared this before :

That the mythological intro might have been played on a Norlin.

That could be it, although this picture looks more like a rosewood saddle rather than ceramic.

 

I didn't buy the mag, but I think I'll go back and get it, since some questions that have been raised might be answered. At about $15, it wasn't cheap, but what the heck?

 

Unfortunately, this particular picture spans the valley (covers two pages) in the mag, so I can't scan it properly to post it. The guitar has an orange label, which I believe means pre-1970, as I think the switch to the "harlequin" label was made in about 1970. It is a color photo, which is nice, so the glimpse of the sides of the guitar that are visible definitely look like Brazilian.

 

I made a mental note of the characteristics, and then checked "Fabulous Flat-Tops" to try to identify the model when I got home. It seemed to line up nicely with the Heritage in most respects.

As I understand it, sometime during 1969 is when full Norlin mode kicked in, although the most devastating Norlin "improvements" might be a little later.

 

There is a picture of John Sebastian with what appears to be a nearly-identical guitar in "Fabulous Flat-Tops".

Would really be interested to see the picture since I STILL have a 1970 Heritage, Brazilian rosewood and all. Interestingly, I just bought a Martin D-42 (yes heresy, I know). It's about the same size as the Heritage (fits nicely into the same custom case), but weighs (it seems) about half as much. The Martin is all refinement, the Gibson a down-to-earth workhorse. I mean you can picture Bukka White playing the Heritage and the Heritage enjoying it. The Martin, you have the feeling, would probably find the experience a kind of muscial date-rape.

So let's get this straight. You were looking at a centrefold featuring a Brazilian? No wonder it cost 15 dollars. You'll be the one moving things towards the poorhouse at that rate - be careful you don't end up in the doghouse.

My wife tolerates my guitar habit, and has adapted to my idiosyncracies. She actually gets the concept of guitar porn, since she was once into vintage British sportscars. Talk about a perversion!

 

Compared to the other things I could be into, she sees guitars as relatively benign. She also has a list of all my guitars, and their approximate market values, in case something happens to me, since I fly about 25-50 times per year. I think she was a bit stunned to see how much I have tied up in guitars.

 

She's looking out for herself pretty well, but she also has one eye on me, particularly when I go into my office for a couple of hours each evening and close the door. Then, strange music comes out.

 

She was the one, after all, who suggested I build a music studio addition onto the house. Of course, that was just about the same time she was looking at doing a $50k re-design of the kitchen.

 

Do you suppose there could be any connection? All in all, however, I think I'll keep her.

So, here is the cover.

It's basically a 125-page picture book with a lot of text, sort of the Reader's Digest or Cliff Notes history of the Stones. There's probably nothing new here for hard-core fans, but there are a lot of photos I had never seen before, including lots of good guitar porn.

 

Keef on the cover with the black ES-355 ain't a bad place to start, and the first inside spread is Keef in 1967, with what I take to be the Brazilian Heritage with ceramic saddle. This guitar would have been new or nearly new when the photo was taken. Can't scan it, as I would have to take the book apart to do it.

Haven't built it yet. Still in the planning stage. Given my work responsibilities, it will be another 15 months before I have time to start it. I'm thinking of retiring when this contract is over, and if I do, this project moves to the top of the list.

 

I usually spend a LOT of time planning before starting a project.

Of course I still love the Stones.

But as always in this twisted, half black way. I wouldn't share my secrets with that gang, , , or let my wife stay at their place over the weekend, no way Mick. We should party and paint the town together instead. In some way that's what I been doin' all my life. Every time I sinned, I always thought of myself as the 8th Rolling Stone hehe he. . . .

 

Got the first single when I was 6. My grandma bought it by mistake as I was a Beatles collector. The sleeve picture - those not so nice, but exiting faces - scared me to a degree where I had to put it in the rear plast-bag of my little 45-rpm album. First all the Fab-records, then maybe 12 empty pockets and finally Stones all by themselves. A-side : Time Is On My Side.

It surely was. . . .
