Casino4Life 7
I am going to be getting a new SG Standard in the Heritage Cherry finish, and just have few questions I owned a SG Special a few years ago, and was fairly happy with it, wasn't to crazy about the dot neck and the faded finish and the pick ups seemed muddy (Could be that I am used to playing a hollow body electric with P-90S) Are the stock pick ups in the new SG Standards any good? I have heard of guys swapping the out with the '57 Classics. Also the neck width, is it thicker that then Specials, it was an '04 model, and I have recently played a new SG so can't compare. Also what about the tuners, will Grover Rotomatics drop right in? I have also seen guys put them in as well. Any help would be appreciated.
sellen 56
Think the neck will be the same, might be a bit slimmer but same width . Some specials have a serious thick baseball bat necks. Stock pickup rock's hard, some like it some not. Grover tuners will fit nicely. Good luck with your sg
Casino4Life 7
Good to know about the neck and Grover's, might hold off on them until I see what stock tuners are like. I also heard the cases that come with it are weak
Dallastx 1
I have played both and the Standard feels better to me. The p/us are just fine. Besides, I want a different tone than my Les Paul..
Casino4Life 7
The Limiteds have the baked maple fretboards opposed to the Standards with rosewood, not a big fan of the idea of a baked maple board
Casino4Life 7
Another question (sorry) Have any of you SG Standard owners had issues with the neck flexign at all? I know it's a problem with the Epiphone G-400s and some guys have said the notice it on Gibson SG Standards?

kidblast 1,380
The Limiteds have the baked maple fretboards opposed to the Standards with rosewood, not a big fan of the idea of a baked maple board I have one, and the I do like fretboard. The pickups - I like them, and not sure you need to worry about the tuners either. These are pretty solid SGs all around.
XPAULPITT 1
I have a Special Faded too with the baked maple and love it. Like baked maple more than rosewood now. The neck is the same as my Standard it just has the thinner finish so u feel the wood grain and that might give the illusion that the neck is thicker. Also, the lack of neck binding makes it seem different. These are just my opinions and I'm sure you'll get people that like to argue about stupid crap who will disagree. XPAULPITT 1
Tuners are awesome too. People that dont like them dont like them because they arent as bulky as all metal tuners so they feel like they are weaker for some reason. As long as they hold tune theyre doing their job, and they do the job just fine IMHO.
JM2112 64
The Limiteds have the baked maple fretboards opposed to the Standards with rosewood, not a big fan of the idea of a baked maple board I think you'll likely change your mind about the baked maple fretboard after trying it. If you can feel the difference between rosewood and ebony, the baked maple feels very close to ebony because it's so dense and tight grained. These maple fretboards are also very smooth and fast playing with excellent response. Don't let those who keep whining about it sway you, most who whine about the baked maple have never even tried one, and once you play your new guitar you'll see what I mean. I have a baked maple fretboard on my LP Classic Custom, and it is just awesome, IMHO!!! The SG Standard has the 490/498 pickups, which are hotter than the Classic 57's and the P-90's. I can still get very clean tones with my SG Standard with no problem, and I can also really give it some punch and snarl when I want it, too. Be sure to post some pics when you get it and let us know how it turns out for you!!!

Casino4Life 7
Whats the deal with the baked maple fretboards? Do they need to be oiled regularly or what?
JM2112 64
Whats the deal with the baked maple fretboards? Do they need to be oiled regularly or what? The maple fretboards being used by Gibson are not sealed or finished. So, yes, you can oil them about every six months like their other guitars. Richlite is the fretboard that does not get oiled. Casino4Life 7
That's a sweet looking SG. Yea that would be nice if the cases stillc ame with the shrouds, but I think that might have been a limited run thing
Casino4Life 7
The whole topic on the rosewood or baked maple fretboard is interesting. I just recieved an email back from Gibson telling me that the SG Standard still comes with a Rosewod fretboard? But i have heard of guys saying theres is baked maple? Has Gibson gone back to Rosewood?

The one I picked up about a month and a half ago is baked maple.
