Pickguard E Logo

More specifically, my recently purchased 1987 "Epiphone by Gibson" Sheraton has a pickguard that is plain black, no logo, and quite thin, as average pickguards go. Is this an original? I'd like to keep the instrument original. Seems like almost all the Sheratons I've seen have the "E" logo on their pickguard.

It's a beauty, by the way. Such an easy neck to play, and what tone! [thumbup]

Haha! Well, that will have to wait a few hours until I get home. Goofing off at work during lunch limits the photographic potential, as the guitar is at home. The Sheraton was getting shined up last night. It cleans up nicely! I have to gingerly remove some of the accumulated patina on the gold pickups, however. There's a warm shine underneath the crud that can be coaxed out with a some gentle rubbing.

I also suspect that the nut may have been replaced, but maybe that's because it looks "newer" than the rest of the guitar. It's been cut a bit too deeply, in my opinion. And speaking of nuts, are some of the stock nuts black? Mine is white.

I'm pretty sure that the 1986-1988 E by G Seratons had an imitation tortoise shell pickguard with a screen printed "E" emblem. Though this is most likely the norm, there is always room for an exception to the rules. Sometimes the catalog pics show guitars with or without the emblem and different pickguards. Its really hard to say for sure. Quite possibly the original owner didnt like the tortoise shell and replaced it with a black one.

Could well be. The pickguard doesn't seem to have the same mojo as the rest of the instrument. I like the tortoise shell look. Heck, I'd be tempted to remove it, but that could open up a can of woyms.

If anything is of concern, it would be the nut. It's a very clean looking white and is cut much too deeply for the strings. I doubt that it's original. Not that I'm a "gotta keep it stock" fanatic, but a properly cut nut is important for tone and performance.

Yeah, its probably a replacement nut. It is very common to replace them. Especially with the age of the guitar, you can almost count on it being replaced at one point. One thing I can say for Epiphone nuts, even though they are cheap plastic, they are very rarely cut too deep.

Well based on the 2nd picture (after extracting the link from it to a browser page) even if we only see the base of your pickguard, I can tell it is not the original one.

Based on what we can see, it seems more like the one from a 335 which is not necessarily a bad thing as many people including me prefer that shape.

I dunno any details about the epsilon E marker, but you can go to post #7 in this thread and edit the links for the remote pics (I've had to do it, too).

At the top of the Epiphone Electrics list there is a Pinned topic - The Information Thread, which contains info on posting pics.. see the Do-It-Yourself section, it's right at the top.

When you're signed in and have a new message box showing (or choose Edit for an existing post), there are some tool icons above the message box (to the right of the smiley face).

The Insert Image tool will pop up a little box for pasting the Image Info of the picture into (make sure there is only one http:// at the beginning of the link).

Regards,

Bill

Congrats on the guitar. My only suggestion to you is with regards to the "gold" finish. I would recommend a cleaner that works more with dissolving vs rubbing on the plating. The gold finish is so thin that you can buff it totally off. That happened to me on the bridge of a brand new Epi SG. Use some "flitz", I think it was, and it cleaned it so good it was just "chrome" now. Rubbed right thru that thin finish like it was nothing. I've switched to a product I use on my Harley's and it is great. No Silicon either!!! Some have said I'm getting a commission for plugging it or something.

Rub in with fingers, let work and wipe off (I like a micro-fiber cloth the best). Keeps the acid on fingers from etching into the finish too (esp the tuners). After treating, a quick light rub w/ micro fiber after playing and the gold looks like a million bucks!

Works for me anyway. Nice on the pickguard too.
