JRTBandit Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 Here is a link to the guitar I described in the Welcome Forum. Just wondering which pegs came on this guitar when it was new. Note the extra hole by the pegs. Thanks http://www1.snapfish.com/slideshow/AlbumID=249241388/PictureID=6295781282/a=84414833_84414833/t_=84414833
Stefptycia Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Hi Buddy I have a 72 deluxe from new but I cant get to your pics. Can you post them on this site please and I'll see if I can help you.
epinder Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 From your welcome forum thread you stated the serial number is: 055xxx so from the Gibson site, I'd say your guitar was manufactured around 1973. The following text is from Gibson: "From 1970-1975 the method of serializing instruments at Gibson became even more random. All numbers were impressed into the wood and a six digit number assigned, though no particular order was given and some instruments had a letter prefix. The orange labels inside hollow bodied instruments was discontinued in 1970 and were replaced by white and orange rectangle labels on the acoustics, and small black, purple and white rectangle labels were placed on electric models. In 1970, the words "MADE IN USA" was impressed into the back of instrument headstocks (though a few instruments from the 1950s also had MADE IN USA impressed into their headstocks as well). Year(s) Approximate Series Manufacture 1970, 1971, and 1972 100000s, 600000s, 700000s, 900000s 1973 000001s, 100000s, 200000s, 800000s and a few “A” + 6 digit numbers 1974 and 1975 100000s, 200000s, 300000s, 400000s,500000s, 600000s, 800000s and a few A-B-C-D-E-F + 6 digit numbers" How's the weather in Chicago? I lived there most of my life. Great city.
JRTBandit Posted November 19, 2008 Author Posted November 19, 2008 Thanks for the replies, I appreciate your feedback. I thought the guitar was a 73 but like I said I thought I knew what was going on but then I would read a different article and be lost so I thought I would check with some experts. The weather in Chicago is COLD, hard to believe on Halloween it was 70 and now it's 40. We have have a few flurries already. See if this link works, I couldn't find how to upload photos to this site. Thanks Jeff http://www1.snapfish.com/share/p=93191227117876476/l=432337466/g=84414833/cobrandOid=1000131/otsc=SYE/otsi=SALB

It should have Deluxe Klusons as in my pic below Regards Stef
JRTBandit Posted November 19, 2008 Author Posted November 19, 2008 Thanks Stef. Does anyone know the word Les Paul printed on the headstock or was it a decal that they manually put on? The reason I asked if you look at the letter L in Model is uneven.
bobv Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 I've seen it referred to as a "silkscreened" logo, but I believe it's a waterslide decal. The "old ladies" at Gibson who put them on in the fifties weren't too exact with the placement, so Tony Bacon's book points out that it was impossible to define a "correct" location for the historic reissues.
lowb5str Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 I have a '69-'71 Deluxe GoldTop and the tuners are also Klusons. Yours have DEFINITELY been replaced. Your headstock looks pretty doggone accurate, but I do NOT work at the factory. Here's a qualifier: How much does it weigh?

mildperv Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 Hi Buddy Again here's a pic of mine to compare. Regards Stef Stef' date=' I'd be willing to bet your tuners aren't original, either... I'm pretty sure early '70's Deluxes didn't come with "double rings." My '73 Deluxe with one of her sisters. [img']http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e172/Mildperv/DSCN0629.jpg[/img]
Stefptycia Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 Hi Mildperv I can definately confirm that my pegs are original however if what you say is correct (which I don't doubt) she may be younger than what I was told at Orange Music in London when I bought her in 1974. I will check on the Gibson site re the serial number and perhaps check and see if the pots are dated. I'll come back to you buddy:d/

If I am not mistaken this was an option on the Deluxe Pro but correct me if I'm wrong Stef
mildperv Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 Hi again Your pups don't look like mini humbuckers - are they p90's. If I am not mistaken this was an option on the Deluxe Pro but correct me if I'm wrong Stef There's nothing original on my Deluxe except the TRC and the tuners! It started as a darker HCB w/mini's. Someone did the requisite routing for humbuckers and made it a goldtop to hide the goof-hider holes and mini switch that was installed at some point (they did not mess with the neck or back). When I got it, I stripped the gold and managed to keep the faded HCB you can see now. I did put a couple of coats if nitro on to keep it as is. I'll try and get a better picture tomorrow.
Stefptycia Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 From what I can see mildperv she 's a good looker. I look farward to seeing some better pics when you've chance Stef
Stefptycia Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Hi mildperv According to the internet she was built in Kalamazoo in either 1970, 71 or 72. I've tried to locate the numbers on the pots which I think are Volume =137734 and the two Tones are 70-028 and 17344. I can't get to the remaining volume pot. I'd post my serial number but I don't think that would be a good idea - however I could pm it to you if you wish. Regards Stef

Double ring Klusons are a commodity these days. They might be worth nearly what your Deluxe is worth...

Until you mentioned it I didn't know that there were other types of Klusons. It's always been said that the Deluxe was built out of spare parts so I suppose there could be allsorts of combinations. How long did it take to rebuild yours to what it is now?
mildperv Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Finally had time to take a new picture. It now has an RS kit and Dr V pickups.
