What was all the internet hubub

There were news stories about not being allowed to access the internet if you were infected with malicious viruses. The way they talked some folks may not know they are infected, but on a specific, recently passed date, they would not be allowed to log onto the internet.

Apparently under the auspices of Homeland Security?

Can anyone shed light on this. I wish I could be more specific, but I never heard any details.

basically if a computer was infected then the way it searches for web pages were diverted to a certain network of servers. At one time those servers were set up to steal information. It was a pretty big network; so big that taking it down when first discovered over a year ago would have caused a lot of people problems. They stopped the crime ring and left the equipment running until this past Monday when they finally shut them off. Anyone still infected would have had problems accessing the internet. This is the very simplified version. Surprisingly, in my current class on Enterprise information assurance we didn't even talk about it.

it was basically another U.S. FBI "fishing trip" in which "if you click this link the FBI will scan your computer free". followed by "if you don't allow the scan, you may well lose internet capabilities and even suffer computer damage.

typical, and "classic" behavior....instill fear, offer a "free way out".....store info gathered w/o a warrant AGAIN !

the FBI & US gov't does NOTHING free!!

I wonder how many hundreds of thousands of people actually fell for this and now have even MORE of their personal info in storage in an FBI/NSA databank......

That's not right at all. Please read the articles. Stop giving people false information. The virus was very real. The people that had it and were unable to remove it will now have to do fresh installs of their operating systems in order to use the internet again. The FBI were keeping those people online but decided that they no longer wanted to keep those servers online. This left nothing to stop the DNSchanger virus from rerouting people through false DNS servers which leave their computers open to attack by whoever wrote the virus and subsequently cut off their internet through DNS corruption.
