straplocks

I assume most of you have strap locks on your Les Pauls, I however do not and really need to get some on there. What is a good brand and do they just screw in to the existing holes left by the original strap buttons?

Not only are Schallers excellent, reliable strap locks, but if you also play Strats, the majority of them have come with Schallers factory installed. You can therefore use the same Schaller equipped straps on both your Gibsons and your Fenders.

Yes, I gig so I want something secure. The Schallers seem like they stick out quite a bit. I have an SG as well so I can see that being uncomfortable. Seems like everyone likes Schaller or dunlop. I'll go pick some up this weekend. Thanks for the advice.

Very true about the Schallers on an SG. I use Schallers on all of my guitars except my SG Jr. where I use Dunlops. I much prefer the Schallers (easier to deal with) but the Dunlops don't stab me in the pasta when playing a guitar with the strap mounted on the back like an SG.

Only put straplocks on my LPs recently. (I used to just use a washer and screw the strap on tight when I gigged a lot - but my guitars then weren't as nice as my Les Pauls) Anyway, I bought the Dunlop and couldn't be happier. I tried the Schallers years ago and didn't like them so much. They stuck out a lot and I didn't like the lock release mechanism as much as the Dunlops. The Schallers seem to be the most popular around here, however. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I've been using the Schallers since the mid 80s. They're on every guitar I have, except my lap steel.

I never cared much for the bulky look of the Dunlops, though I am sure they are just as good. When I started using locks, the Schallers were the only thing sold in my area, so I didn't really have any other choices. These days, it's just a matter of preference and cost.

If you do want to use the Schallers, but the replacement screw is too small, you can drill out the piece that goes on your guitar to accept a larger stock screw. I'm not sure if other brands would allow that option.

What I like about the Shallers is that they just seem like a more secure design. Even if the release mechanism were to fail, the strap pin is still cupped inside the part of the lock on the strap. With the Dunlops, it's just a pin inside of a tube where, if the release mechanism failed, the pin could slip out.
