GWRW1964
Sorry for asking what is most likely a rookie question but I have a Gibson SG and am unsure of the year it was manufactured. The serial # is 00152949. Some sources say its a 2002, some say it's a '76. Any ideas?
BigKahune
. A 1972 would have a six digit serial number. Your number is in the modern format started in 1977 which uses 8 numbers - 00152949 YDDDYPPP YY is the production year DDD is the day of the year PPP is the plant designation and/or instrument rank. So yours is a 02 = 2002 . specifically January 15th, 2002 . plant designation/rank 649 This info is found here - http://www.gibson.com/Files/downloads/bluebook/GibsonSERIALNUMBERS.pdf Additional info here - http://www2.gibson.com/Support/Serial-Number-Search.aspx . GWRW1964
Thanks for the prompt reply. My confusion stemmed mainly from the fact that it looks WAY older than that. Oh well, I guess my 'vintage' SG isnt so vintage after all. Thanks again.
BigKahune
. "Looks way older" . . . Well hold on. There was a transition period (1976-1977) and your number does fit 1976 (starts with two zeros followed by six digits in the range of 100000 to 200000) So post some pics. The members here will be able to tell you from the pics if the SG is from the 70s. Pic posting help - http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/11005-sticky-how-to-post-photos/ . BigKahune
. That sure looks like a 70s stamp to me. Does the back of the headstock/neck have a volute (that bump pictured below)? We'd like to see the whole guitar, so please post an overhead shot of the whole guitar and a shots of the front and back of the headstock - no angles, no cut-offs, decent lighting. Here's a 1976 -

GWRW1964
By the way, I'm pretty sure these are NOT the original machine heads and 2 toggle switched have been added at some stage so disregard those.
dem00n
Seems to be modded...interesting.
Jeff-7
Looks like a 70's SG to me, those mini toggles are for phase switching I presume?
L5Larry
As the serial number is on a decal, and the "00" is slightly spaced from the other numbers, this serial number is definitively from 1976.
BigKahune
. Nice job on the pics. And yes, I also agree, definitely a 1976 SG Standard. It's been modded, and looks in good shape. Cool guitar. .

rainbowdemon427
Take the backplate off and look at the serial numbers on the potentiometers. Unless they've been changed, that should give you the date information. Also the square inlays on the fretboard suggest it's not a 2002 guitar to me. They stopped those and reverted to the trapezoid inlay in about 1986, as I recall. Also they started fitting the bat-wing scratchplate around the same time, yours has the small plate.
