buying a new amp.

Been playing guitar for years but I know little about amps. Seems mine is about to go it's a 40v valve (do you call these tubes in the States) so I'm on the market. I need an amp for my studio so volume is not important but I do like quality of sound and buzz free at low volume. Can an members advise me what to buy please.

Your description of what you want is really vague. Are you wanting something super clean? Lots of chime? High gain? Crunchy? British style or American? Price range? There's so many options in the lower watt style anymore it's hard to gauge what you're after without knowing what qualities you're needing.

You mentioned that your current tube (valve) amp is starting to go. Have you considered getting it repaired? I know tube amps are usually repairable. If you like how it sounds, maybe consider that.

I'd go for like a Vox AC15 though if I were in the market for something new. I love those things.

The two best amps I've ever heard for the money, are the Bugera V22 -$400, 22 watts tube, 1-12" speaker, nice and chimey and full also. They used to dependability issues a few years ago. I think that's done. Mine has been great for two years.

And Blackstar. Blackstar aren't quite as boutique sounding, but they are perhaps more SERIOUS sounding amps-made by guys who left Marshall. A little more expensive than the Bugera. The 1-12" 20 watt is probably $600, the 1-12" 40 watt is $700 (I had this 40, it was amazing!! -I traded it for a bigger Blackstar)

I dunno about the reissues, but the old Deluxe Reverbs were incredibly versatile for a picker in the '60s and they certainly ain't bad nowadays. I wish I still had mine.

OTOH, Twiz has a great suggestion: Have you checked to see if a new tube or whatever might get you going again for a fraction of the price of a new amp you may or may not like as well as your current one?

Then you have more cash left over for GAS. (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome)

we've owned cheapo solid states, vintage Randall (Dimebag), VoxAC30, Mesa Boogie Dual Rect...but the simple Bogner Alchemist seems to consistenly impress my son and I. Good reviews...very under-rated. He's fixin' to sell the Mesa and get an Alchemist head for himself.

If you want the best I would go for a Dr Z amplifier. Since volume is not an issue I would look at a MAZ 8. (You will still get plenty of volume suitable for small gigs, or any size gig micked up). If you want something bigger then look at a MAZ 18. If you can handle loud volume then you can't go wrong with a Z Wreck, buy it will cost you a lot. Any of these amplifiers will give you tone and versatility.

Lot of good advise for you guys, thank you. One thing I realized when looking at these things is how expensive they are1 So I took advise and found a repairer just about twelve miles from me seems he can fix it so all's well.
